About this role
University of Tennessee at Martin's Mechanical Services department is seeking two technicians to support the university's research and instructional operations through hands-on work with complex mechanical systems. You would collaborate with faculty and students to design, build, and maintain specialized laboratory equipment alongside managing the campus infrastructure—HVAC, refrigeration, pumps, and hydraulic systems that keep research spaces running. The role combines troubleshooting and repair work with fabrication responsibilities, meaning you'd both fix what breaks and adapt or create components when commercial options don't exist.
This position demands six years of HVAC experience and current or obtainable certifications: Shelby County 1st class refrigeration operator's license, EPA Universal Certification, and OSHA 10 or higher. You'll need solid skills in welding, machining, and diagnostic work, plus the ability to handle equipment up to 15 tons and work safely in labs, mechanical rooms, and confined spaces. The role also includes mentoring student workers and developing preventive maintenance programs to keep systems reliable.
The position is full-time and in-office in Memphis, with occasional evening and weekend work, possible overnight travel, and emergency call-in expectations during campus disruptions. This role suits someone with established HVAC credentials who enjoys both independent problem-solving and collaborative project work in an academic research environment.
