About this role
Working in KEEN's Maker Lab for 10 weeks this summer means getting direct access to professional footwear designers and hands-on involvement in real product development. You'll move between 3D modeling software, prototype printing, pattern engineering, and physical lab work—learning how sandals and boots actually get made while contributing to innovation studies that shape KEEN's future designs. This is a working internship, not an observational one.
The role demands solid technical skills before you start: proficiency in Adobe Suite and 3D modeling software, familiarity with shop tools and material science, and ideally some background in pattern making or sculpting. You'll need to be a Junior, Senior, or recent graduate in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field where prototyping is central to the curriculum. Beyond the technical requirements, KEEN is looking for someone genuinely interested in sustainability and the outdoor industry—not just checking boxes—who can communicate clearly, take initiative, and thrive in a collaborative environment.
The internship runs 10 weeks from mid-June through mid-August at KEEN's Portland headquarters, requiring full-time commitment (40 hours per week, Monday–Friday) with no more than four vacation days allowed. You'll earn $22 per hour and gain access to product discounts, a subsidized cafeteria, networking with industry mentors, and the Portland outdoor scene. This is an on-site role with occasional local travel, and you must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
