What You'll Do
Epic Games is seeking an experienced Senior Language Programmer to join our Verse team, which owns the toolchain (compiler, VM, and runtime) that powers game development in Unreal Engine and UEFN. You'll work on the systems every UE and UEFN developer relies on to build and ship games with Verse.
In this role, you will
- Extend, evolve, and maintain the Verse compiler toolchain, transactional memory runtime and VM, add new platform support, implement new language features and integrate with Unreal Engine's content, build, and cooking pipelines
- Optimize performance, memory usage, and iteration times across the Verse toolchain, runtime and UE/Verse boundary
- Work closely with language consumers to ensure an exceptional user experience
- Establish test workflows to validate improvements and prevent regressions
- Design and maintain the scripting interface to Unreal Engine, working in close collaboration with the Verse Language team and the broader UE engineering organization
What we're looking for
- Expert knowledge of C++17 or later
- Experience in compiler or toolchain development (e.g., compiler internals, VM design, Clang/LLVM, or linker/platform ABI specifics)
- Experience developing and optimizing large codebases, with the ability to make tradeoffs between usability, performance, and power
- Strong ability to reason about large, interconnected systems
- Solid grounding in software engineering principles, including API design
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work autonomously and deliver practical solutions
- Experience with Unreal Engine integration is a plus

About this role
Epic Games' Verse team is looking for a Senior Language Programmer to own core compiler and runtime infrastructure that powers game development across Unreal Engine and UEFN. You'd be responsible for extending the Verse compiler toolchain, virtual machine, and transactional memory systems—the foundational technology that every UE and UEFN developer depends on. This means working across the full stack: implementing language features, optimizing performance and iteration times, adding platform support, and designing the scripting interface between Verse and Unreal Engine itself.
The role demands deep expertise in C++17 or later and proven experience in compiler or toolchain development—whether that's compiler internals, VM design, LLVM/Clang, or platform ABI specifics. You'll need to reason clearly about large interconnected systems, make sound tradeoffs between usability and performance, and communicate effectively across teams. Experience with Unreal Engine integration is valued but not required. This is an in-office position in Cary, North Carolina, suited to someone who wants to work on the systems-level technology that enables thousands of developers worldwide.
Epic offers comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with 100% premium coverage for employees and dependents, a 401k with competitive match, unlimited PTO and sick time, paid company breaks throughout the year, and a paid sabbatical after seven years of employment. Mental well-being support is available through Modern Health.
