PROGRAMMING - UNREAL ENGINE
What We Do
Unreal-powered projects have been on the bleeding edge of real-time entertainment for over 20 years. Our team of programming experts are always innovating to improve the tools and technology that empower content developers worldwide.
What You'll Do
Epic Games is seeking an experienced Senior Language Programmer to join our Verse team, which owns the toolchain (compiler, VM, and runtime) that powers game development in Unreal Engine and UEFN. You'll work on the systems every UE and UEFN developer relies on to build and ship games with Verse.
In this role, you will
- Extend, evolve, and maintain the Verse compiler toolchain, transactional memory runtime and VM, add new platform support, implement new language features and integrate with Unreal Engine's content, build, and cooking pipelines
- Optimize performance, memory usage, and iteration times across the Verse toolchain, runtime and UE/Verse boundary
- Work closely with language consumers to ensure an exceptional user experience
- Establish test workflows to validate improvements and prevent regressions
- Design and maintain the scripting interface to Unreal Engine, working in close collaboration with the Verse Language team and the broader UE organization
What we're looking for
- Expert knowledge of C++17 or later
- Experience in compiler or toolchain development (e.g., compiler internals, VM design, Clang/LLVM, or linker/platform ABI specifics)
- Experience developing and optimizing large codebases, with the ability to make tradeoffs between usability, performance, and power
- Strong ability to reason about large, interconnected systems
- Solid grounding in software programming principles, including API design
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work autonomously and deliver practical solutions
- Experience with Unreal Engine integration is a plus
This role is open to multiple locations in North America (including CA, NYC, & WA).

About this role
Epic Games is looking for a Senior Language Programmer to own core infrastructure that thousands of developers depend on. You'd work on the Verse toolchain—the compiler, virtual machine, and runtime that powers scripting in Unreal Engine and UEFN. This means extending the language itself, optimizing performance across the entire stack, and designing the interface between Verse and Unreal Engine's broader systems.
The role demands deep expertise in C++ and hands-on experience building compilers, VMs, or similar low-level systems (LLVM, linkers, platform ABIs). You'll need to think clearly about large interconnected codebases, make sound tradeoffs between usability and performance, and communicate effectively across teams. Prior Unreal Engine experience is valued but not required. The position is in-office at one of several North American locations, with base pay ranging from $193,888 to $284,369 depending on locale.
This is a fit for someone who enjoys working on the tools that enable others rather than shipping end products, who can operate with some autonomy, and who wants to directly influence how millions of developers write code.
