Our Applied Data Science team turns dunnhumby’s analytical capability into real commercial impact for our clients. Working directly with retailers and brands, we design and deliver the models, algorithms and insights that answer the hardest questions in retail — from personalisation and basket analysis to pricing, promotions and customer loyalty. Every insight we produce is grounded in real customer data and built to make a measurable difference.

 

About the Role

As an Applied Data Science Manager, you'll lead a team of applied data scientists, turning complex problems into compelling insights using the best of dunnhumby science. You'll combine technical expertise, client understanding and people leadership to develop recommendations that resonate with clients and lead them to action.

 

You'll play an important role in connecting client strategy with advanced data science, ensuring your team delivers high-quality, timely work while identifying new opportunities to create value through our products, analytical techniques and science.

 

What You'll Be Doing

• You'll lead both the people and the work, creating an environment where applied data science delivers clear commercial impact.
• Partner with Client Leads to shape annual client workplans around business needs and strategy, while allocating people and resources to deliver measurable, timely results.
• Lead your team in translating complex client challenges into compelling insights and recommendations, using advanced data science techniques to support executive decision-making and action.
• Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and clients, ensuring the team clearly understands client challenges, growth strategies and agreed measures of success.
• Champion the reuse of dunnhumby science, modules and code, and guide the team in deploying data science algorithms and market products on the appropriate technology stack.
• Hire, mentor, motivate and retain a strong team of applied data scientists, while maintaining high standards for quality assurance, ways of working and coding.

 

What We're Looking For

• You'll bring a combination of practical data science experience, strong leadership and the ability to connect sophisticated analysis with real customer and commercial outcomes.
• Experience applying advanced statistical models and machine learning algorithms to solve complex problems, alongside a practical approach to using data to create tangible customer impact.
• Experience handling large data volumes with modern processing tools such as Hadoop, Spark, SQL or Python.
• Strong data analysis, modelling and project management skills, with the ability to frame problems, test hypotheses and turn findings into clear recommendations.
• Strong client and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to present analytical methodologies, insights and solutions through effective storytelling.
• Experience leading and developing people, with an appreciation for product development, quality assurance and creating reusable, scalable data science solutions.
