PROGRAMMING - UNREAL ENGINE

What We Do

Unreal-powered projects have been on the bleeding edge of real-time entertainment for over 20 years. Our team of programming experts are always innovating to improve the tools and technology that empower content developers worldwide.

What You'll Do

Epic Games is seeking an experienced Senior Language Programmer to join our Verse team, which owns the toolchain (compiler, VM, and runtime) that powers game development in Unreal Engine and UEFN. You'll work on the systems every UE and UEFN developer relies on to build and ship games with Verse.

In this role, you will

  • Extend, evolve, and maintain the Verse compiler toolchain, transactional memory runtime and VM, add new platform support, implement new language features and integrate with Unreal Engine's content, build, and cooking pipelines
  • Optimize performance, memory usage, and iteration times across the Verse toolchain, runtime and UE/Verse boundary
  • Work closely with language consumers to ensure an exceptional user experience
  • Establish test workflows to validate improvements and prevent regressions
  • Design and maintain the scripting interface to Unreal Engine, working in close collaboration with the Verse Language team and the broader UE engineering organization

What we're looking for

  • Expert knowledge of C++17 or later
  • Experience in compiler or toolchain development (e.g., compiler internals, VM design, Clang/LLVM, or linker/platform ABI specifics)
  • Experience developing and optimizing large codebases, with the ability to make tradeoffs between usability, performance, and power
  • Strong ability to reason about large, interconnected systems
  • Solid grounding in software engineering principles, including API design
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work autonomously and deliver practical solutions
  • Experience with Unreal Engine integration is a plus

About this role

Epic Games' Verse team is looking for a Senior Language Programmer to own core infrastructure that millions of developers depend on. You'd be responsible for the compiler, virtual machine, and runtime that power Verse scripting in Unreal Engine and UEFN, working across the full stack from language features and optimization to integration with UE's build and content pipelines. This is a systems-level role where you'll make architectural decisions that affect both performance and developer experience, collaborate closely with language consumers and the broader UE engineering organization, and establish testing practices to validate changes at scale.

The ideal candidate has deep expertise in C++ and hands-on experience building compilers, VMs, or toolchains—whether that's compiler internals, LLVM, platform ABIs, or linker work. You'll need strong systems thinking to reason about large interconnected codebases, solid software engineering fundamentals including API design, and the communication skills to work autonomously while delivering practical solutions. Prior experience with Unreal Engine integration is valued but not required.

Epic offers comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage at no employee cost, mental health support through Modern Health, unlimited PTO and sick time, paid company breaks throughout the year, and a sabbatical after seven years. The role is full-time and based in their London office.
