About this role

Working on a live system that processes thousands of orders daily, you'd be responsible for both advancing a newly built Java backend and keeping it stable in production. This role sits at the intersection of feature development and incident response—you'll write and review code, collaborate across teams to ship new capabilities, and troubleshoot performance issues when they arise. The work demands someone who thinks beyond individual tasks and can articulate trade-offs in technical decisions.

The position calls for solid Java fundamentals paired with hands-on experience in Spring Boot, REST APIs, microservices architecture, and the supporting ecosystem: Kafka, Elasticsearch or SOLR, PostgreSQL, Docker, and AWS. You'll need strong SQL skills, familiarity with design patterns, and the ability to optimize for performance. Proficiency with IntelliJ, Git, JIRA, and Maven is expected. Experience with e-commerce systems, particularly Broadleaf Commerce, is a bonus but not required.

This is a contract role based in Brazil, CO, with hybrid flexibility. You'll work in an Agile environment where you can contribute to decisions about the technical direction, and you'll need availability to overlap with a 3 pm CST cutoff. The client is a well-established American manufacturer in the yearbook and memorabilia space, backed by Exadel, a 25-year-old engineering firm with significant enterprise clients. The role suits someone who's proactive, comfortable with both building and maintaining systems, and wants to see their work have immediate impact.
