Description

About Us

Engelhart was founded in 2013 by BTG Pactual Group as a commodities trading company. Our business model is “asset light” and highly diversified – giving us the ability to adapt effectively and nimbly to changing market conditions. We have assembled successful multidisciplinary teams, leveraging advanced fundamental analysis with deep quantitative and weather research capabilities.  Our activities are underpinned by strong risk management practices and by powerful technology and operational excellence. We have exceptional teams with diverse global backgrounds and decades of experience, and are driven by a highly collaborative culture, across products and competencies.

In 2024, Engelhart acquired Trailstone, a global energy trading and technology company. The acquisition provides us with new expertise, analytics and proprietary technology which is being used to provide risk management and optimisation services to help maximise the value of our clients’ renewable power. The acquisition also expanded Engelhart’s capabilities into physical natural gas across North America, a critical fuel to support the energy transition.

Our talented and experienced individuals work together according to its four company values: Performance, Agility, Collaboration, Entrepreneurship.

About the Role

As Principal Data Engineer, you will own the intraday and end-of-day data serving layer between the CTRM platform and its downstream consumers. You will shape the architecture, standards and engineering practices that enable teams across the business to access trusted, timely and well-defined data. This is a hands-on technical leadership role with the opportunity to influence how the business builds and uses its data platform.

This will be a full-time role, based in our London office, owning the following responsibilities:

  • Own the intraday and EOD data serving layer between the CTRM platform and its consumers, including Market Risk, Credit Risk, Treasury, Finance, Reporting and desk tools.
  • Design and maintain robust data schemas and serving contracts, including SQL, APIs and Kafka-based distribution.
  • Define data versioning and reproducibility patterns, including as-of timestamps and run IDs, snapshots and incremental updates, with appropriate treatment of position and P&L data.
  • Own the CTRM-to-warehouse data pipeline, ensuring reliable ingestion, transformation, validation and delivery to downstream consumers.
  • Lead the implementation and production use of the data warehouse serving layer, closing out the current proof of concept and turning it into a production-ready platform.
  • Set engineering standards for data modelling, schema evolution, data quality, observability, testing and operational support.
  • Build and operate solutions using relevant platform technologies, including ClickHouse, S3, Kafka and schema registry tooling.
  • Work closely with stakeholder teams to understand their needs, propose solutions, explain trade-offs and establish clear, dependable data contracts.
  • Provide technical leadership to the data engineering team, raising the quality of design and implementation while encouraging collaboration, constructive challenge and continuous improvement.
  • Help shape the longer-term data architecture and engineering approach as the business and its data requirements evolve.

About You

You will be a technically strong and proactive data engineering leader who can turn complex business requirements into robust, scalable data products. You are comfortable supporting multiple teams, bringing forward clear recommendations and new ideas, and engaging constructively when your designs are challenged. You want to help shape the future data architecture of the business, not simply deliver against a predefined specification.

As a result, we believe the following experiences and skills are essential for this role:

  • Demonstrable experience designing and building data warehouses; this is a non-negotiable requirement.
  • Hands-on production experience with ClickHouse; this is a non-negotiable requirement.
  • Experience delivering a columnar OLAP data platform in production, with a strong understanding of analytical query performance and data modelling.
  • Practical experience with Kafka and event-driven or streaming data architectures.
  • Strong Python engineering skills and sufficient C# literacy to work effectively with systems and codebases that use C#.
  • Experience modelling versioned position and P&L data, including point-in-time or as-of views and reproducible runs.
  • Experience working in a trading or other time-sensitive, data-intensive business environment.
  • Previous technical leadership, including setting standards and guiding engineering decisions.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the confidence to put forward solutions, bring ideas into discussions and engage positively with challenge.
  • A solution-oriented mindset and the ability to balance the needs of multiple downstream teams while maintaining coherent platform standards.

The following experience is not required, but highly desirable for this role:

  • Experience in commodities trading or energy markets.
  • Exposure to a Commodity Trading and Risk Management (CTRM) system, such as Orchestrade or Endur.
  • Familiarity with dbt and/or data quality frameworks.

What we offer

  • Competitive compensation and participation in Engelhart’s discretionary bonus plan.
  • 25 days of annual holiday entitlement, excluding UK public holidays.
  • Robust benefits package such as medical, dental, life insurance, generous pension contribution, and supplemental benefits partially subsidised by the Company.
  • Eligibility to receive external and internal training in accordance with our Training & Development Policy.

We believe in inclusivity and are therefore dedicated to ensuring all employees – across gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, life experience, background and more – feel welcome and included in the company. We promote diversity because we believe it is essential to our ability to think holistically.

About this role

Engelhart is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to lead the design and operation of its data warehouse serving layer—the critical bridge between its CTRM platform and downstream business teams including trading desks, risk, finance and reporting. This is a hands-on technical leadership role based in London, requiring you to own the full lifecycle of intraday and end-of-day data pipelines, from CTRM ingestion through to delivery via SQL, APIs and Kafka. You'll define data schemas, versioning patterns and engineering standards while building production infrastructure using ClickHouse, S3, Kafka and schema registry tools, and you'll work closely with stakeholders to establish clear data contracts that serve their evolving needs.

The role demands strong foundational expertise: you must have demonstrable experience designing and building data warehouses in production, with hands-on ClickHouse experience being non-negotiable. You'll need practical knowledge of columnar OLAP platforms, streaming architectures with Kafka, and solid Python skills alongside working familiarity with C#. Experience modelling versioned position and P&L data for point-in-time reproducibility is essential, as is prior technical leadership where you've set standards and guided engineering decisions. A background in trading or other time-sensitive, data-intensive environments is expected; exposure to CTRM systems, commodities markets or energy trading would be valuable but not required.

Beyond technical capability, Engelhart values your ability to engage constructively with multiple teams, propose solutions confidently, and balance competing needs while maintaining coherent platform standards. The company offers competitive compensation with discretionary bonuses, 25 days holiday, comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, life insurance and pension contributions, and access to training and development.
