What You'll Do
Epic Games is seeking an experienced Senior Language Programmer to join our Verse team, which owns the toolchain (compiler, VM, and runtime) that powers game development in Unreal Engine and UEFN. You'll work on the systems every UE and UEFN developer relies on to build and ship games with Verse.
In this role, you will
- Extend, evolve, and maintain the Verse compiler toolchain, transactional memory runtime and VM, add new platform support, implement new language features and integrate with Unreal Engine's content, build, and cooking pipelines
- Optimize performance, memory usage, and iteration times across the Verse toolchain, runtime and UE/Verse boundary
- Work closely with language consumers to ensure an exceptional user experience
- Establish test workflows to validate improvements and prevent regressions
- Design and maintain the scripting interface to Unreal Engine, working in close collaboration with the Verse Language team and the broader UE organization
What we're looking for
- Expert knowledge of C++17 or later
- Experience in compiler or toolchain development (e.g., compiler internals, VM design, Clang/LLVM, or linker/platform ABI specifics)
- Experience developing and optimizing large codebases, with the ability to make tradeoffs between usability, performance, and power
- Strong ability to reason about large, interconnected systems
- Solid grounding in software programming principles, including API design
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work autonomously and deliver practical solutions
- Experience with Unreal Engine integration is a plus

About this role
Epic Games' Verse team is looking for a Senior Language Programmer to own and evolve the compiler, virtual machine, and runtime that power Verse scripting across Unreal Engine and UEFN. You'd be responsible for the full toolchain—from compiler internals and platform support to performance optimization and integration with UE's build pipelines. This role sits at a critical junction: you're building the systems that thousands of developers depend on daily, which means your work directly shapes the developer experience and the feasibility of what creators can build.
The position demands deep expertise in C++ and proven experience in compiler or toolchain development, whether that's through work on LLVM, VM design, or platform-level systems. You should be comfortable reasoning about large, interconnected codebases and making pragmatic tradeoffs between performance, usability, and maintainability. Close collaboration with the Verse Language team and the broader Unreal Engine organization is central to the work, so strong communication and the ability to deliver practical solutions matter as much as technical depth.
This is a full-time, in-office role in Vancouver with a base salary range of $210,609–$308,893 CAD. Epic covers 100% of employee and dependent benefits, including medical, dental, vision, mental health support through Modern Health, and a competitive retirement match.
