About this role

UL Solutions is looking for a functional safety expert to lead the development of safety work products across vehicle and automation platforms—from electric and autonomous vehicles to industrial equipment and energy storage systems. You'd own the full safety lifecycle for complex programs, creating safety cases and requirements that comply with standards like ISO 26262, ISO 21448, UL 4600, and others. The work involves conducting and directing safety analyses (FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, STPA), defining safety concepts at system and component levels, and verifying compliance across hardware, software, and diagnostic architectures.

This role demands someone with at least five years in automotive functional safety and hands-on experience designing electronic systems. You'll need a strong grasp of ISO 26262 and ISO 21448, plus proficiency in the full range of safety analysis methods. A degree in electrical, automotive, or mechanical engineering (or equivalent background) is required. Beyond technical work, you'll lead client workshops, represent UL at industry events, and help shape proposals and statements of work—so client-facing communication and business acumen matter here.

Based in Detroit but fully remote, the position offers a salary of $120,000 to $145,000 plus a 20% annual bonus target, standard health and wellness benefits, and 15 vacation days plus 12 holidays and 72 hours of sick time. Occasional travel to client sites is expected.
