About this role

DLH is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to oversee life safety compliance across a large portfolio of federal buildings supporting the National Institutes of Health. You would review designs and shop drawings for over 50 buildings, conduct construction inspections, witness system acceptance tests, and perform hazard analyses—all while applying NFPA codes and issuing final occupancy permits. The role is based in Bethesda with hybrid flexibility and minimal travel, offering stability and the chance to contribute directly to public health infrastructure.

The position requires a bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related field and at least two years of fire protection experience. A Professional Engineer's License is desired but not required to start. You'll need a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance. This is a full-time role paying $105,000–$110,000 annually, with standard benefits including PTO, medical and dental coverage, 401(k) matching, and professional development support.

This role suits someone with solid fire protection fundamentals who wants hands-on responsibility for real buildings and systems rather than purely design or consulting work. If you're comfortable with codes, inspections, and working within a federal compliance environment, and you value work-life balance, it's worth considering.
