About this role

Leading the visual strategy at the San Antonio Express-News means managing both the creative and operational sides of a news photo and video department. You'll edit content for quality and relevance across digital and print, coordinate daily assignments and breaking news logistics, coach visual journalists, and work closely with other departments to identify visual storytelling opportunities. A significant part of the role involves presenting visuals in afternoon budget meetings and collaborating with the audience team on initiatives designed to grow readership—reflecting an organization that prioritizes digital engagement alongside traditional print.

This position requires at least three years of newsroom visuals experience and a degree in journalism, photography, video, or related field. You'll need to edit video on deadline, work comfortably with software like Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Photo Mechanic, and be available for weekend and evening shifts. Supervisory experience is preferred but not required. The ideal candidate combines strong technical editing skills with a genuine audience-first mindset, understands how social media amplifies reach, and can maintain journalistic ethics and knowledge of communications law as it applies to photography.

The role is hybrid, based in San Antonio with four days per week in the office. Hearst Health offers comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a retirement plan with matching, generous paid time off, paid parental leave, mental wellness support, and various family-focused benefits. You must have the right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
