About this role

At KOAT (Hearst Health's ABC and CBS affiliates in Albuquerque), the Assignment Editor role is the operational nerve center of the newsroom. You'll monitor police scanners across a dozen-plus agencies, sift through tips and press releases to identify what matters to viewers, and coordinate coverage across on-air and digital platforms. This is a leadership position where your judgment about what stories to pursue directly shapes the station's output, and where you'll work closely with producers, reporters, and digital editors to keep everyone aligned during both routine days and breaking news situations.

The role demands someone with solid experience listening to police scanners and a working fluency with social media platforms and digital publishing tools. You'll need to handle multiple information streams simultaneously—scanner traffic, emails, calls, social media monitoring—and make quick decisions about newsworthiness while staying composed under pressure. Familiarity with local news technology and FTP file transfer is expected, or you should be willing to learn it quickly.

This is a full-time, in-office position in Albuquerque requiring flexibility with shifts, including nights and weekends. Hearst offers medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) matching, paid time off, paid parental leave, and emotional wellness support. Prior military experience is a consideration for the role.
