About this role
Astranis operates a fleet of satellites serving government and enterprise customers with demanding uptime and security requirements, and this role sits at the center of making that happen reliably. As Senior Mission Operations Engineer, you would own the procedures and processes that keep those satellites running safely—from initial commissioning through day-to-day operations—while building out the tools and automation that let a growing ops team scale without sacrificing reliability. You'd work closely with hardware engineers to translate their designs into operational reality, investigate anomalies when they occur, and take the lead during critical moments like launch and commissioning.
The position requires at least eight years of satellite operations experience and a solid grasp of at least one spacecraft subsystem, along with scripting ability (Python preferred) and hands-on skill in telemetry analysis and anomaly investigation. You'd be equally comfortable designing operational software, writing procedures, and automating manual processes as you would be troubleshooting live issues. The role also includes responsibility for hiring and mentoring additional ops engineers as the team grows.
Astranis offers base salary between $150,000 and $195,000, plus equity, comprehensive healthcare, 401(k), and flexible PTO. The position is full-time and in-office in San Francisco. U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required due to export control regulations governing space technology.
