The Opportunity

As a Technical Consultant at Appian, you won’t just write code—you will architect modern business transformations. This role offers an unprecedented opportunity to sit at the intersection of business strategy and technical innovation. You will work side-by-side with client executives to solve complex workflow problems, build robust integrations, and empower enterprise teams to achieve Enterprise-Grade Orchestration.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect & Implement: Design, develop, and deploy robust, custom automation solutions throughout the entire project lifecycle utilizing Appian’s low-code platform.
  • Integrate Ecosystems: Build seamless data connections and scalable APIs to integrate multiple external enterprise systems using REST, SOAP, and JDBC connections.
  • Engineer Data Models: Launch new relational data models in production environments and optimize database design through sophisticated SQL development.
  • Lead Agile Delivery: Partner within cross-functional teams using Agile methodologies (sprints, stand-ups, pair programming) to rapidly deliver high-value features.
  • Empower Clients: Collaborate closely with client technical teams and business stakeholders, driving platform adoption and training users to become self-sufficient.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree: Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, or a closely related technical field.
  • Experience: 1+ years of hands-on experience in software development or technical implementation consulting.
  • Core Engineering: Proven track record with Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), database design, and SQL (writing complex queries, joins, and views).
  • Requirements Gathering: Demonstrated ability to analyze client business processes and translate them into functional and technical system requirements.
  • Mobility: Willingness to travel up to 20% to support customer engagements and on-site collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with modern cloud architecture and environments, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, or Elastic Containers.
  • Exposure to Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Analytics, and automated test suites within a continuous integration framework.
  • We value experience with enterprise platforms such as Salesforce or ServiceNow, as these skills translate well into our Enterprise-Grade Orchestration environment.

About this role

Appian's Technical Consultant role puts you at the center of enterprise digital transformation, working directly with Fortune 500 clients to design and deploy custom automation solutions on their low-code platform. Rather than maintaining legacy systems, you'll own end-to-end project delivery—architecting workflows, building integrations across complex enterprise ecosystems, and optimizing database design using SQL and APIs. This is consulting work grounded in hands-on engineering: you'll move between strategy conversations with client executives and implementation work alongside their technical teams, all within an Agile environment.

The position requires a computer science or related degree plus at least one year of software development or consulting experience, with solid fundamentals in object-oriented programming, SQL, and database design. You should be comfortable translating business requirements into technical solutions and willing to travel up to 20% for client work. Cloud architecture experience (AWS, Google Cloud) and familiarity with enterprise platforms like Salesforce or ServiceNow are valued, as is exposure to AI and modern testing frameworks.

Appian positions this as a launchpad for building consulting expertise while gaining deep platform knowledge. The McLean, Virginia office is on-site, and the salary range spans $75,000 to $175,000 depending on experience and qualifications. The package includes standard benefits, mentorship during onboarding, and access to Appian University for ongoing skill development.
