About this role
SpaceX's Asset Engineering team builds the factory systems that manufacture Starship and Starshield hardware, and this senior role owns the electrical and software design of those automated manufacturing and test systems from concept through production ramp. You would lead development of motion control, robotic systems, and machine automation software while designing the electrical and pneumatic infrastructure to support them. The work spans the full lifecycle: architecting SCADA and MES integration, managing build and validation, and providing expert troubleshooting on existing systems alongside cross-functional mechanical and fluids engineers.
This position requires at least five years designing and building industrial automation or electro-mechanical systems, with strong software development skills for controlling automated equipment. Experience with industrial robotics (Kuka, ABB, Fanuc), PLC programming (particularly Beckhoff or Siemens platforms), and high-level languages like Python or C++ is preferred. You should be comfortable with motion system sizing, electrical troubleshooting, fieldbus configuration, and ideally machine vision for inspection—essentially, the ability to architect simple solutions to complex manufacturing problems across mechanical, electrical, and software domains.
The role is full-time and in-office at the Hawthorne facility, with the expectation of extended hours and weekend availability. Compensation ranges from $135,000 to $215,000 base salary, plus stock options, potential bonuses, and standard benefits including medical coverage and paid time off. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required due to ITAR export control regulations.
