Description
The Technical Lab Manager is responsible for establishing, managing, and continuously improving Laboratory functions within a Biomanufacturing Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) based in Maple Grove, MN. This pilot plant will help bridge a gap in the domestic biotech industry (non-pharma), providing clients with emerging fermentation technologies the ability to demonstrate upstream and downstream processes at a scale which supports future commercial scale design. The facility is currently under construction, with expected mechanical completion in October 2027. This role will be instrumental in establishing laboratory systems, hiring and developing staff, and standing up operational readiness for first customer runs.
This role plays a critical part in enabling successful scale-up by leading laboratory operations with a strong technical focus on microbial culture management, seed train propagation, and aseptic fermentation support. The role ensures laboratory capabilities effectively support process development, pilot-scale production, and customer tech transfer programs. The analytical chemistry functions fall under the Technical Lab Manager’s oversight, so expertise in analytical chemistry or quality systems is preferred but it is not the technical focus of this role. The Technical Lab Manager will be supported by a Lead Analytical Chemist, who—along with the rest of the laboratory staff—will report directly to the Technical Lab Manager.
This person will strongly support and advocate a “zero harm” safety culture, proactively engaging employees in this culture. This position reports to the Pilot Facility Manager and works closely with Operations, Process Engineering, Maintenance, and EHS teams.

About this role
BioMADE is building a new biomanufacturing pilot plant in Maple Grove and needs a Technical Lab Manager to establish its laboratory operations from the ground up. You'd be joining during the construction phase, with the facility expected to open in October 2027, giving you the opportunity to shape laboratory systems, hire and develop your team, and prepare for first customer runs. This is a leadership role with real scope: you'll oversee microbiology, fermentation support, analytical chemistry functions, and all lab operations that enable process development and pilot-scale production.
The core of the work centers on microbial culture management, seed train propagation, and aseptic fermentation support. You'll develop SOPs, establish preventive maintenance and calibration programs, manage inventory, and build competency in your team across microbiology, analytical testing, and benchtop fermentation. You'll partner closely with Process Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance to ensure the lab reliably supports the pilot plant's mission of helping the domestic biotech industry scale emerging fermentation technologies.
This role calls for a bachelor's degree in microbiology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, or food science, plus at least seven years in a laboratory supporting fermentation or biotech, with a minimum of three years in lab management. You'll need hands-on expertise in aseptic techniques and culture propagation, a strong safety orientation, and solid communication skills. Experience with pilot or commercial plants, analytical chemistry, or downstream separations is valued but not required. The position starts hybrid (3 days on-site) and transitions to full-time in-office once the facility is operational. Salary ranges from $105,000 to $145,000.
