Description
Role Overview
Help our team at The Dallas Morning News lead the charge on visual journalism in a North Texas market hungry for it. From breaking news to viral trends, you'll set the agenda and shape how our audience understands critical issues through photo and video.
Strong visuals are the basis of this Photo Intern position. From the first week, you will be expected to perform like a staff member—shooting and editing stills and video, working under tight deadline pressures, and using social media on the job for professional purposes. Editors and other photographers will critique your visual storytelling and technique, including lighting, composition, lens work, cropping, toning, captions and video editing.
What You’ll Do
- Shoot and edit stills and video.
- Write accurate and compelling photo captions.
- Work under tight deadline pressures.
- Use social media on the job for professional purposes.
- Work with editors to develop coverage that resonates with our digital audience.
What You’ll Bring
- Your effective organization, smooth workflow and technical excellence will be required to complete a heavy workload of shooting.
- You’ll demonstrate the ability to transmit on deadline, submit numerous images for slideshows, send smartphone stills and/or video from breaking news or live events, occasionally shoot SLR video, and potentially work on short- or long-term projects.
- The culture of our newsroom will demand positive energy, intelligence, excellent written and verbal language skills, grace under pressure, attention to detail and big picture vision.
- By taking full advantage of learning from our very strong shooters, you will be better prepared to enter the workforce full time.
- Valid driver's license and registered vehicle to travel to assignments.
About this role
Hearst Health's Dallas Morning News is looking for a photo intern ready to contribute meaningfully to visual journalism from day one. You'll shoot and edit both stills and video across breaking news, trending stories, and planned coverage—working at the pace and standard of a staff photographer rather than a traditional intern. The role demands technical proficiency with cameras and editing software, the ability to write clear photo captions, and comfort transmitting images and video on tight deadlines, sometimes from live events via smartphone.
This position suits someone organized, detail-oriented, and able to stay composed under pressure while maintaining positive energy in a newsroom environment. You'll receive direct critique and mentorship from experienced photographers and editors focused on strengthening your visual storytelling, composition, lighting, and editing skills. You'll need a valid driver's license and registered vehicle to travel to assignments around the Dallas area. The internship is based in-office and runs through Fall 2027, offering genuine hands-on experience in a major market's newsroom rather than peripheral tasks.
