About the Role:

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer in Test II (SDET II) to improve the quality, reliability, and delivery speed of our software products. This role will design and maintain automated test solutions, strengthen our testing practices, and partner with engineering and product teams throughout the development lifecycle.

The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering skills with a quality-focused mindset and can independently solve moderately complex testing and automation challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain automated test cases and test suites, working within established automation frameworks and patterns.
  • Create test strategies and plans covering functional, integration, regression, end-to-end, performance, and reliability testing.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and improve the speed, stability, and usefulness of test feedback.
  • Review product requirements and technical designs to identify risks, edge cases, and testability concerns early.
  • Diagnose failures across application, test, infrastructure, and data layers, partnering with developers to resolve root causes.
  • Monitor and report quality metrics such as defect trends, test coverage, escaped defects, and automation reliability.
  • Reduce flaky tests and improve the maintainability and execution efficiency of the automation suite.
  • Participate in code reviews and promote engineering practices that improve testability and software quality.
  • Execute manual and exploratory testing for Electronic Logging Device (ELD) compliance solutions, including hardware-in-the-loop setups utilizing Android tablets, telematics devices/On-Board Computers (OBCs), and in-cabin vehicle testing.
  • Must be able to work on-site a minimum of 3 days per week

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3-4 years of experience in software development, test automation, or quality engineering.
  • Proficiency in Python, or a comparable object-oriented language (Java, C#, Ruby, JavaScript/TypeScript)
  • Experience with Gherkin/BDD frameworks.
  • Experience with mobile UI automation (Appium, Espresso, XCUITest, or similar).
  • Comfort with REST API testing — OAuth-based auth flows, building/debugging HTTP request wrappers, reading API error responses.
  • Experience working with Git, CI/CD systems, and Agile software development practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot distributed systems using logs, metrics, traces, and debugging tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and nontechnical teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience testing cloud-based applications or services in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Working knowledge of Docker and dev containers for running a consistent local test environment
  • Experience testing Android applications (UiAutomator2, adb)
  • Familiarity with test reporting tools (Allure, ReportPortal, or similar).
  • Experience with performance and load-testing tools such as k6, JMeter, or Gatling.
  • Knowledge of accessibility, security, contract, or resilience testing.
  • Experience improving test architecture, reducing flaky automation, or modernizing legacy test frameworks.
  • Familiarity with observability platforms and production-quality monitoring.
  • Practical experience using AI coding tools, with the judgment to verify and adapt AI-generated code.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or leading quality initiatives across multiple teams.
  • Experience in a regulated/compliance-driven domain

About this role

Platform Science is seeking an SDET II to build and maintain automated testing infrastructure for their IoT transportation platform. You'd own the full testing lifecycle—designing test strategies across functional, integration, performance, and end-to-end scenarios, integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines, and diagnosing failures across application and infrastructure layers. The role includes hands-on work with Electronic Logging Device (ELD) compliance solutions, which means testing against real hardware like Android tablets and telematics devices in vehicle environments. You'll also partner with developers and product teams to catch quality issues early and reduce flaky tests in the automation suite.

This is a contract position based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, requiring at least three days per week on-site. You'll need 3–4 years of test automation or quality engineering experience, solid Python skills (or equivalent OOP language), and hands-on familiarity with mobile UI automation frameworks like Appium, REST API testing, Git, and CI/CD systems. BDD/Gherkin experience and the ability to troubleshoot distributed systems are essential. The role rewards depth in areas like cloud testing, Docker, Android-specific tools, test reporting platforms, and performance testing—plus any experience modernizing legacy test frameworks or mentoring others.
