Description

Role Overview

The Houston Chronicle is looking for an adaptable and detail-oriented student journalist to join its Breaking News team as a Reporting Intern for the summer 2027 internship program.

Reporting interns will have the chance to work in one of America’s most exciting news markets, reporting and writing timely stories about the events, issues and trends shaping Houston and Texas. They will gain hands-on experience covering stories on deadline, developing follow-ups, pitching story ideas and collaborating with editors, photographers and audience journalists to deliver accurate, engaging coverage.

Past summer interns were essential contributors to our coverage, including reporting on topics like extreme weather events, the FIFA World Cup, social justice protests and political rallies. Our paid internship opportunities have also propelled several former interns to full-time roles on the Chronicle’s staff.

Hybrid: This hybrid internship is based in Houston, TX and requires working in the Chronicle’s office at least 3 days per week.

  • Report and write timely, accurate stories.
  • Collaborate with editors, photographers and the audience team to deliver coverage that meets high standards for accuracy, speed and engagement.

  • Conduct interviews with officials, witnesses and community members on deadline.
  • Verify information from social media, public records and other sources before publication.
  • Contribute to live blogs and enterprise follow-ups as news develops.

What You’ll Bring

  • Juniors, seniors or recent graduates with prior experience at a college news publication or professional news organization.

  • Must obtain housing in Houston.

About this role

You'll spend ten weeks reporting breaking news in Houston, one of the country's most active news markets, working alongside experienced journalists at the Houston Chronicle. The role demands speed and accuracy—you'll pitch story ideas, conduct interviews on deadline, verify information across multiple sources, and collaborate with editors and photographers to publish timely coverage. Past interns have reported on everything from extreme weather and major sporting events to social movements and politics, and several have moved into full-time positions at the Chronicle afterward.

This is a paid position ($15/hour for 40 hours weekly, early June through early August) that requires you to be in the newsroom at least three days a week and occasionally work weekends when news breaks. You'll need to be a junior, senior, or recent graduate with prior experience at a college or professional news outlet, plus you'll need to arrange your own housing in Houston and have a personal laptop with reliable internet access.
