About this role

Ascension's Clinical Pastoral Education Residency in Austin offers a structured pathway for chaplains to deepen their practice within a large Catholic health system. You'll provide pastoral visitation, lead worship services, and respond to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients and families—including crisis support and bereavement care—while completing an accredited CPE curriculum designed to build self-awareness and clinical competency in ministry.

The role suits candidates with a bachelor's degree and ideally some theological training or prior CPE coursework. While three years of pastoral experience is preferred, the position is structured as a residency, meaning it's designed for those ready to formalize and expand their skills in a healthcare setting. Ordination or faith group equivalency is valued but not stated as required. You'll document your work according to healthcare standards and be part of Ascension's larger mission as a nonprofit Catholic system serving diverse communities.
