About this role

You'd be building Ansa's field application function from the ground up as its first director—a significant opportunity to shape how the company supports customers in adopting its gene synthesis platform. The role sits at the intersection of technical expertise and leadership, requiring you to establish strategies, processes, and a team of Field Application Specialists while maintaining direct customer engagement through site visits, troubleshooting, and technical consultations. You'll work closely with application development, R&D, manufacturing, and sales to ensure customer success drives both retention and revenue growth.

This position demands deep expertise in synthetic biology, genome editing, and gene synthesis technologies—not just familiarity, but the ability to translate that knowledge into customer training, technical content, and strategic guidance. You'll need at least ten years in customer-facing field applications or technical sales, with a minimum of five years managing technical teams. A PhD in molecular biology or related field is expected, ideally paired with 7+ years specifically in gene editing or gene synthesis. The role requires extensive travel (30% minimum) and proficiency with Salesforce and similar commercial tools.

The position offers a competitive salary of $180k–$250k, equity, and the chance to work in a fast-growing biotech company during a formative phase. You'd be based in Emeryville, California, with a standard Monday–Friday schedule and a comprehensive benefits package.
