  • Maintain and update HR policies, procedures, employee handbook materials, and compliance-related documentation.
  • Develop and improve HR processes that promote consistency, communication, accountability, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Deliver training and guidance to leaders and employees on HR-related topics.

 Qualifications:

  • Five to seven years of progressively responsible HR experience with independent ownership of multiple HR functions, including employee relations, performance management, payroll, benefits, recruiting, compliance, policy administration, and onboarding/offboarding.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal and Ohio employment laws, HR best practices, and employee relations principles.
  • Experience serving as a trusted advisor to leaders, with strong communication, coaching, relationship-building, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Experience working with HRIS and payroll systems and supporting day-to-day HR operations.
  • Ability to work independently in a department-of-one environment and occasional evenings or weekends during Cincinnati Opera's production season.
  • Experience supporting seasonal workforces, payroll administration, compensation planning, workforce planning, vendor management, HR/payroll system transitions, unionized environments, and/or nonprofit or arts organizations is preferred.

About this role

Strategic HR Inc. is recruiting a part-time Director of Human Resources for Cincinnati Opera, a mission-driven arts organization seeking an experienced HR leader to manage the full spectrum of HR functions in a lean, independent role. You would serve as the primary HR advisor to approximately 25 year-round employees and a substantially larger seasonal workforce, handling everything from employee relations and performance coaching to recruiting, benefits administration, payroll oversight, and compliance. This is genuinely a department-of-one position, so you need comfort owning multiple HR functions simultaneously and the judgment to know when to escalate to external counsel or vendors.

The role demands five to seven years of progressive HR experience with demonstrated expertise across employee relations, payroll systems, benefits administration, and policy development. You should be comfortable working independently, communicating clearly with both employees and leadership, and maintaining confidentiality under pressure. Because Cincinnati Opera's activity surges during its June-August production season, you'll need flexibility to increase onsite time then, though the typical schedule averages 30 hours weekly with hybrid arrangements (Tuesday-Thursday preferred most of the year).

The position offers a salary range of $75,000–$85,000 annually, standard benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, a 403(b) match, and paid time off. Prior experience with seasonal workforces, nonprofit or arts organizations, HRIS transitions, or unionized environments is valued, as is an SHRM certification and genuine appreciation for opera and Cincinnati Opera's mission.
