In this role, you will stand up Bankrate's enterprise-grade risk and controls function from scratch, serving as the first line of defense embedded in the business and owning the day-to-day execution of risk mitigation, controls, and governance. Today this work is spread thin across Legal and handled ad hoc; you'll be its permanent, dedicated, high-horsepower owner, working alongside an independent Compliance function (second line) and Legal, which continues to own legal judgment calls, contract negotiation, and external counsel. Impact on the business: As Bankrate pursues deeper enterprise partnerships, expands its mortgage brokering footprint across more states, and prepares its risk posture for an eventual exit, this role builds the risk and controls foundation that growth requires, with direct visibility to the executive leadership team and a full suite of AI tools to scale further than headcount alone would allow.
What You'll Do:
- Drive Bankrate's monthly Risk & Compliance Committee: set the agenda, track outstanding follow-ups, and keep the executive leadership team accountable to open items.
- Run bi-weekly Risk & Compliance meeting governance, including agenda-setting and follow-up tracking.
- Respond to quarterly risk assessments, partnering with Legal & Compliance to gather requested information and project-manage the resulting mitigation roadmap with the business.
- Own project management across all governance initiatives and ensure proper documentation, including a historical archive.
- Use AI to design and stand up Bankrate's first-line-of-defense program, starting with Mortgages, then monitor and test the business's ongoing compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Manage third-party due diligence requests, both Bankrate's submissions to third parties and documentation of Bankrate's requests to them.
- Coordinate with the CISO/IT Security function and RV Corporate to create and refresh Bankrate's internal policy library, moving it from inherited Red Ventures-branded policies to Bankrate-owned ones.
- Validate and record Bankrate's adherence to its ~60 internal policies.
- Serve as Bankrate's conduit to Red Ventures' Procurement, Security, and Data Privacy processes, streamlining workflows to increase speed and mitigate risk.
- Manage Bankrate's portfolio of existing and pursued certifications (SOC, EcoVadis, ISO, WCAG, etc.) across Bankrate, Red Ventures, and third parties.
- Build AI-enabled employee compliance training (e.g., Fair Lending) to replace vendor-created content, increasing scale and quality.
What We're Looking For:
- 10+ years of progressive risk, compliance, or control management experience; a strong individual-contributor track record is fine, and prior people management is not required.
- Financial services experience is required; consumer home loans/mortgage experience is strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to project-manage complex, cross-functional initiatives and drive them to completion through influential communication.
- Proven track record using AI as a productivity tool, including building agentic workflows to perform repetitive, multi-step job responsibilities.
- Working knowledge of first-line/second-line risk frameworks (e.g., three lines of defense), and comfort operating as the first line rather than as an arm's-length reviewer.
- Comfort building from scratch: designing processes, cadences, and documentation where none exist today.
- High energy, low ego, and genuine enthusiasm for an undefined, still-being-built function.
- Exceptional organizational and communication skills; able to drive dozens of open workstreams at once and communicate progress clearly to executives.
Compensation:
Total Compensation Range: $150,000 - 225,000 per year, including base salary, target bonus.
Actual compensation varies based on location, experience, and qualifications.
Additionally, the following benefits are provided by Red Ventures, subject to eligibility requirements.
- Health Insurance Coverage (medical, dental, and vision)
- Life Insurance
- Short and Long-Term Disability Insurance
- Flexible Spending Accounts
- Holiday Pay
- 401(k) with match
- Employee Assistance Program
- Paid Parental Bonding Benefit Program
- Flexible Paid Time Off (PTO): We believe time to rest and recharge is essential. That's why we offer a generous and flexible PTO policy. Full-time employees accrue 20 days of PTO for a full calendar year annually, with an increase to 25 days after five years of service.
Who We Are:
Bankrate is where Americans go to get the best price on life's most important financial decisions. By combining proprietary data, advanced technology, and deep market coverage, Bankrate helps consumers compare options and make confident financial choices across mortgages, credit cards, savings, and more. As a rate provider to the Federal Reserve and the benchmark relied upon by major publishers and policymakers nationwide, Bankrate's rate data is the national standard. This commitment to precision is reflected across all its products. In mortgages, proprietary auction technology puts lenders in real-time competition on price alone, consistently delivering rates in the lowest 10% in the country. For deposits, the platform features exclusively top-tier rates in the top 10% nationally, while its credit card coverage encompasses more than 90% of the market by volume. Founded by a journalist, Bankrate remains dedicated to its founding mission of transparency, honest information, and real competition — helping to make the American dream more affordable for everyone.

About this role
Bankrate is building its risk and controls function from the ground up, and this role is the permanent home for that work—currently scattered across Legal and handled reactively. You'd report directly to the COO and own the day-to-day execution of risk mitigation, governance, and compliance as the organization pursues deeper enterprise partnerships, expands its mortgage brokering footprint, and prepares for eventual exit. This means designing processes where none exist, chairing monthly Risk & Compliance Committee meetings, managing quarterly risk assessments, and overseeing certifications (SOC, EcoVadis, ISO, WCAG) across Bankrate and its parent company Red Ventures.
The work spans multiple domains: standing up a first-line-of-defense program using AI, managing third-party due diligence, validating adherence to roughly 60 internal policies, building AI-enabled compliance training, and coordinating with security, procurement, and data privacy functions. You'll project-manage complex cross-functional initiatives and communicate progress to executives while juggling dozens of open workstreams. The role explicitly calls for someone comfortable building from scratch, with high energy and low ego.
You'll need 10+ years in risk, compliance, or controls—financial services is required, mortgage experience strongly preferred—plus a proven ability to use AI as a productivity tool and operate within first-line/second-line risk frameworks. This is a contract remote role (any U.S. time zone) with compensation of $150,000–$225,000 annually plus standard Red Ventures benefits including health coverage, 401(k) match, and flexible PTO.
