Description
At Scale LLP, we have built a different kind of law firm, one that gives experienced attorneys the freedom to practice on their terms and the support of a national team, without the overhead and bureaucracy of traditional firms. We are seeking a California-barred litigator who can be located anywhere within California. You will work alongside a highly regarded partner who serves clients across the outdoor recreation, sports, hospitality, and resort industries.
The Opportunity
This contract position offers the flexibility of remote work and a reduced hours schedule, averaging 20 to 30 hours per week. The engagement is for an initial 6 to 8 month term. We anticipate the work will remain relatively steady, and there is a high possibility this role will turn into a full time opportunity. You will step into an established stream of work supporting sophisticated litigation and counseling matters for businesses in some of the most dynamic industries, from ski resorts and mountain bike parks to hotels, venues, equipment manufacturers, retailers, and trade associations.
- Work from anywhere in California.
- A fully remote practice with the flexibility to work where you are most productive, without losing meaningful connection with colleagues.
- Work is already there. Join existing client matters with a steady pipeline of work, averaging 20 to 30 hours per week.
- Interesting clients. Apply your skills to complex liability, catastrophic injury, risk management, and employment matters in outdoor recreation, sports, and hospitality.
- A strong partner. Work directly with an established leader and contribute to client relationships.
- A real look at Scale. Curious about our model? This is a hands on way to experience our clients, our partners, and our platform, with a real possibility of a full time role at the end.
- A supported way back in. Returning to practice after time away? The reduced hours schedule is a manageable way to rejoin high quality work with a collaborative partner.
Who You Are
You are an experienced litigator who enjoys complex disputes, working directly with clients, and taking ownership of your matters.
You bring:
- An active California bar license and residence in California
- 7+ years of civil litigation experience, ideally including complex commercial, liability, or catastrophic injury matters
- Strong legal writing, including motion practice and pretrial filings
- Sound judgment, strong communication, and the ability to manage matters with a high degree of ownership

About this role
Scale LLP is building a different kind of law firm model, and this contract position offers an experienced California litigator the chance to test that approach while maintaining flexibility. You'd work 20 to 30 hours per week remotely from anywhere in California, supporting an established partner who serves outdoor recreation, sports, hospitality, and resort clients. The work centers on complex liability, catastrophic injury, risk management, and employment disputes—the kind of sophisticated matters that require both strong legal judgment and direct client relationships. The initial 6 to 8 month engagement has genuine potential to convert to full-time, making this a low-risk way to evaluate whether Scale's model works for you.
This role suits someone with at least seven years of civil litigation experience who wants meaningful work without the traditional firm structure. You'll own your matters and work directly with clients rather than rotating through a large team. The reduced hours schedule makes it particularly appealing if you're returning to practice after time away or simply seeking a more sustainable pace. The client base—ski resorts, mountain bike parks, hotels, equipment manufacturers—is specific and dynamic, so you should have genuine interest in serving these industries, not just generic litigation experience.
