If you are interested in being a part of an organization that operates within the intersection of technology and health, please apply today!

Responsibilities

  • Participate in selected interviews, listening sessions, and follow-up discussions where specialized UMLS, terminology, interoperability, or Health IT expertise is needed.
  • Help formulate technically appropriate questions and clarify user workflows, dependencies, terminology models, mappings, interfaces, and data-exchange use cases.
  • Interpret technically complex user feedback and help distinguish terminology, data-model, interoperability, API, mapping, and implementation considerations.
  • Assist the engagement team in accurately documenting and synthesizing technical findings and identifying questions requiring additional NLM or stakeholder follow-up.

About this role

Black Canyon Consulting is looking for a health informatics and terminology expert to work part-time with the National Library of Medicine on UMLS-related user engagements. You would participate in interviews and listening sessions with technical stakeholders, help shape questions around terminology systems, interoperability, FHIR, APIs, and data exchange, and then interpret the feedback to distinguish between terminology, data-model, and implementation considerations. The role centers on translating complex technical findings into clear documentation and identifying areas where UMLS itself might need improvement or modernization.

This is a good fit if you have solid grounding in health informatics, biomedical terminology systems, or Health IT interoperability—and ideally hands-on experience with UMLS, terminology modeling, FHIR, or work alongside developers and data architects. You'll need to communicate technical concepts clearly to mixed audiences and have either advanced education in a related field or equivalent specialized experience. The part-time, remote structure suits someone who can contribute focused expertise without a full-time commitment.

Black Canyon offers medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401k with employer contribution, paid time off, and tuition reimbursement, with salary based on your experience level.
