About this role

At Hospital for Veterinary Surgery, Manhattan's only surgery-exclusive veterinary hospital, the Kennel Assistant role is the foundation of a clean, safe, and organized surgical environment. You'll handle daily cleaning and sanitation across operating suites, recovery spaces, kennels, and communal areas—work that directly supports the hospital's ability to deliver elite surgical care. Responsibilities include mopping and sanitizing treatment spaces, managing laundry and supplies, handling biohazard waste safely, and keeping client-facing areas presentable. While you won't provide direct animal care, you'll work alongside dogs and cats in post-operative recovery and must be comfortable with the realities of a surgical setting: blood, bodily fluids, and medical odors.

This entry-level position requires physical stamina—you'll be on your feet, bending and lifting up to 40 pounds throughout an 8:30 AM to 5 PM Monday-Friday shift. No prior experience is necessary, though cleaning or kennel background is valued. You'll need reliability, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety protocols. The role may occasionally expand to include holding animals under supervision or assisting with instrument sterilization, depending on your experience and the day's needs.

HVS invests in its team with comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, up to 120 hours of paid time off annually, 401(k) matching, paid parental leave, and employee pet discounts. The salary range is $20–$22 per hour, based on your skills and experience.
