About this role

American Veterinary Group's UrgentVet clinic in Naperville fills a specific niche: after-hours urgent care for dogs and cats that sits between routine daytime practice and full emergency medicine. You'd work solo shifts handling common acute cases like wounds, ear infections, vomiting, and euthanasia—no wellness visits, no abdominal surgeries, and no overnight emergency work. The clinic is paperless and modern, equipped with digital radiography, cloud-based records, and full in-house lab capabilities designed for efficient single-doctor operations.

This role suits a veterinarian who wants clinical variety and autonomy without the intensity of 24-hour emergency medicine or the repetition of general practice. The schedule is flexible but limited to swing and second shifts only. You'd be expected to build relationships with clients and staff, mentor support team members through the practice's internal training program, and engage with the broader Chicago veterinary community. The Fear Free and feline-friendly approach suggests a practice culture focused on low-stress handling.

The compensation package is comprehensive: continuing education is fully covered, licensing fees and professional dues are paid, and you get three weeks PTO plus paid parental leave. There's also personalized mentorship, peer consultation with other veterinarians in the group, and significantly discounted care for your own pets. A valid DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited school and an active state license (or ability to obtain one) are required.
