BILL is looking for a Software Engineer to join our Growth - Activation and Expansion team. If you are passionate about driving user growth and improving customer experiences through innovative engineering solutions, this is the job for you! Its focus includes acquiring and activating customers, improving onboarding, and expanding customer adoption across BILL products.
We’d love to chat if you have:
- BS/MS in Computer Science or related area
- 3+ years developing systems/software for large business environment platforms on Java
- Experience implementing complex distributed systems and robust, highly scalable, and performant SaaS applications
- Experience with AWS: ECS, lambda, SQS, SNS, S3, Kinesis, etc.
- Experience with database design for SQL (Oracle, MySQL) and NoSQL databases (DynamoDB)
- Experience with build tools like Gradle and implementing CI/CD pipelines
- Excellent teamwork and communication; ability to work across multiple feature teams and product managers
- Experience leveraging Gen AI technologies to accelerate software engineering by designing prompts, rigorously evaluating outputs, and integrating LLMs

Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed below. About this role
BILL's Growth team is hiring a Software Engineer II to build systems that help businesses acquire, activate, and expand their use of BILL's financial automation platform. You'd work on distributed systems and scalable SaaS applications in a fintech environment, focusing on the engineering that drives customer growth and improves onboarding experiences. This is a remote-first role with the flexibility to connect in person at offices in San Jose or Draper when needed.
The position requires at least three years of backend development experience in Java on large-scale platforms, with solid expertise in AWS services, database design across SQL and NoSQL systems, and CI/CD implementation. You should be comfortable designing complex distributed systems and have hands-on experience with modern tooling like Gradle. An added advantage is familiarity with generative AI tools for engineering workflows—specifically designing prompts and integrating LLMs into development. A BS or MS in Computer Science or related field is expected, and you'll need existing US work authorization.
The salary range is $130,000–$156,000 depending on location and experience, with a comprehensive benefits package including fully paid health coverage, flexible time off, stock purchase options, and wellness programs. Note that visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
