Key Responsibilities
The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is at the forefront, internationally, of the scientific exploration of the universe. SAO combines its resources with those of the Harvard College Observatory to form the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). The CfA is the best-known astrophysics center in the world. Its programs range from ground-based astronomy and astrophysics research to space-based research, the engineering and development of major scientific instrumentation for space launch and use in large ground-based facilities, and research designed to improve science education. The research objectives of SAO are carried out primarily with the support of Government and Smithsonian Institution funds, with additional philanthropic support. Government funds are in the form of Federal appropriations or the form of contracts and grants from other agencies. In contrast, Institution funds are available to SAO through grants from the Institution's Restricted Funds, Special Purpose Funds, Bureau Activities, Business Activities, and non-Federal contracts and grants.

About this role
The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's Central Engineering division seeks an Electronics Engineer to support cutting-edge astrophysics research and instrumentation development. Based in Cambridge, this role offers a career ladder opportunity, with selection at either grade 9 or 11 and potential for non-competitive promotion to grade 11. You'll perform hands-on engineering work across circuit design, signal processing, testing, and systems integration for electronic equipment used in space-based and ground-based research missions.
Day-to-day responsibilities span engineering analysis and design of RF systems, digital and analog components, and instrumentation; functional and environmental testing using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and other diagnostic tools; and technical documentation including schematics, design specifications, and engineering change proposals. You'll collaborate with senior engineers, contractors, and vendors during design reviews and procurement activities, and at grade 11, you'll take on more formal documentation and field support roles, including site installation of millimeter receiver hardware for astronomical instruments.
The position requires a professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program and U.S. work eligibility. This is a trust fund role (not federal civil service), offering a salary range of $69,905–$109,959 and benefits including health and dental coverage, retirement plan, transit benefits, and childcare access. Export control requirements apply; visa sponsorship may be available for eligible candidates.
