Job Overview

We are looking for a Senior Product Experience Designer for our Chicago office, with a strong knack for interface design to join our team, focusing on In-Person Payments (IPP) and Localized Payment Teams. In this role, you will bridge complex backend mechanics and hardware constraints with intuitive, beautifully crafted user interfaces across terminal screens, mobile SDKs, and regional checkout flows across the globe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own Complex Experience Logic: Take ownership of the end-to-end user journeys connecting in-person touchpoints (Payment terminals, SoftPOS (Tap to Pay, mobile SDKs) and regional checkout adaptations across EMEA, LATAM, APAC, and North America. Translate complex underlying payment mechanics into clear, intuitive product experiences.

  • Interface Design Mastery & UI Craft: Lead with a strong eye for visual hierarchy, micro-interactions, and interface design. Drive the details of screen layouts across compact terminal displays, merchant onboarding flows, and localized checkout components to ensure every pixel meets a high quality bar.

  • Core Triad Partnership: Partner closely with Product Managers and Engineering Leads from early discovery through execution. Articulate clear design rationale while balancing technical hardware and API constraints with merchant and shopper usability.

  • Eliminate Friction & Maintain UI Quality: Proactively identify experience debt and usability bugs across high-traffic IPP and localized surfaces. Apply and contribute to foundational design systems to ensure consistency, accessibility, and visual elegance across devices and web interfaces.

  • Distill Technical & Regulatory Complexity: Transform multi-layered payment configurations (regional scheme rules, local tax IDs, terminal branding profiles, and offline transaction limits) into simple, self-serve interface interactions.

  • Collaborative Alignment & Knowledge Sharing: Serve as a connective bridge between IPP hardware teams, regional go-to-market teams, and global platform designers. Document design patterns and share localized context to ensure global scalability without sacrificing local relevance.

  • Industry Innovation: Lead industry scanning to bring new PX methods, tools, and emergent technologies (specifically AI and LLMs) into Adyen, advancing our design framework and operational efficiency.

This is you

  • Advanced Design Experience: 6+ years of experience designing complex, large-scale systems and framework-agnostic, end-to-end mobile products (iOS, Android), with a proven track record of driving impact across multiple product streams and solution areas.

  • Strategic Partner: You are comfortable sitting at the table with senior business and technical stakeholders, translating complex user ecosystems and technical trade-offs into compelling, actionable narratives.

  • Mentor by Influence: You excel in strategic thinking and craft excellence. You lead through inspiration and architectural standards rather than hierarchy.

  • Thriving in Ambiguity: You are at your best when the problem is undefined. You take organizational challenges and turn them into clear, scalable frameworks that teams can execute against.

About this role

Adyen is seeking a Senior Product Experience Designer to lead the user experience across its in-person payment solutions—spanning payment terminals, mobile SDKs, and localized checkout flows across multiple regions. You'd own the full journey from discovery through execution, translating complex payment mechanics and hardware constraints into intuitive interfaces while partnering closely with product and engineering leaders. The role demands someone who can distill regulatory complexity and regional payment rules into simple, self-serve interactions, all while maintaining visual excellence and accessibility standards across diverse devices.

This position suits a designer with 6+ years building large-scale, end-to-end mobile products who thrives as a strategic partner to senior stakeholders. You'd need the ability to work comfortably in ambiguity, turning organizational challenges into scalable frameworks that teams can execute. Beyond craft excellence, you'd serve as a connective bridge between hardware teams, regional go-to-market groups, and global platform designers—documenting patterns and sharing localized context to enable global scalability. The role also includes exploring emerging technologies like AI and LLMs to advance Adyen's design capabilities.

Based in Chicago with an expectation of at least three days in-office weekly, this full-time position offers a salary range of $180,000–$250,000, plus equity, 401(k), and standard benefits.
