About this role
UL Solutions' fire safety lab in Northbrook needs someone who can bridge hands-on technical work with engineering problem-solving. You'd design and build custom test fixtures and equipment, interpret technical drawings and data, and develop test procedures—but this role goes further than typical lab work. You'll actively participate in live fire testing in full protective gear, which means comfort with high-stakes environments and the ability to stay composed and decisive when conditions are genuinely dangerous. The position requires SCBA certification (or willingness to obtain it) and qualifications to operate heavy equipment like forklifts and boom lifts.
The ideal candidate has at least two years of university-level engineering or related study, plus proven hands-on experience in laboratory and mechanical assembly work. You should be comfortable with hand and power tools, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and skilled at creative problem-solving and communication. Beyond technical competence, this is a role that demands ownership—you'll help coordinate lab workflows, maintain equipment and spaces, and contribute to continuous improvement across operations.
The salary range is $50,000 to $98,000, with a 5% annual bonus target, standard health and wellness benefits, and 27 days of paid time off annually. This is a full-time, in-office position in Illinois.
