About this role
Town & Country Animal Hospital is looking for an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join a small, AAHA-accredited two-doctor practice in Southeast Portland. This role demands solid technical skills—venipuncture, catheter placement, digital radiography, anesthesia support, and surgical assistance—along with the ability to handle the full scope of veterinary nursing duties from patient intake and vital signs to lab work, pharmacy, and client education. You'll work in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail and efficiency matter, but within a practice that explicitly prioritizes mentorship, professional growth, and work-life balance.
The hospital values people who are self-directed, collaborative, and genuinely interested in developing their skills further. You'll spend most of your time assisting veterinarians during exams and procedures, restraining animals safely, maintaining records, and supporting surgical cases. The physical demands are real—expect to stand for extended periods, lift up to 40 pounds occasionally, and work around noise, chemicals, and animal waste. The schedule runs Monday through Saturday, typically four 9–10 hour shifts per week.
At $20–25 per hour depending on your experience and credentials, this is a full-time position with solid benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, continuing education support, and a 401(k). The hospital is explicit about wanting someone with at least one year of prior veterinary assistant experience and surgery experience in particular. If you're looking for a stable, supportive practice where you can build long-term, this could be a strong fit.
