Description

Fabricator III

Deeplocal creates inspiring moments for brands in the real and virtual worlds. We strategize, imagine, design, and fabricate ambitious experiences from concept to execution. Our work is driven by inventive technology, design, storytelling, craft, and most importantly, humans.

We’re looking for a Fabricator III with strong woodworking and CNC skills to join our team. In this role, you’ll handle high-quality fabrication across a variety of exhibit and interactive projects—including assembly, finishing, painting, digital fabrication, and working with wood, metal, and solid surfaces. As a senior member of the fabrication team, you’ll also mentor junior fabricators, help lead shop workflows, and contribute to production decisions.

If you love building things, pay close attention to details big and small, and thrive in a fast-paced shop environment, this role might be for you. You’ll work alongside a collaborative team of designers, engineers, and creative technologists who share your passion for creating one-of-a-kind experiences.

Responsibilities

Fabrication: Build high-quality custom components using wood, metal, and plastics with precision and care.

Finishing: Perform painting, bodywork (like Bondo), and surface prep for exhibits and sub-assemblies.

Installation & Commissioning: Active participation in fielding completed works at remote customer sites, both domestic and overseas, as well as follow on support and maintenance.

Problem Solving: Tackle challenges creatively and with expertise.

Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure projects hit their goals on time and within budget. Advocate for methods and practices during design phases to steer projects for success and quality related to the craft being utilized.

Mentorship + Leadership: Guide shop workflows, support junior fabricators, and assist leadership with resourcing and decision making on builds.

Equipment + Shop Care: Keep work areas and machinery clean and inspected daily. Request new parts and supplies as needed with management approval. Collaborate on future needs planning and procuring equipment, materials, and resources to support growth.

Desired Skills

  • Primary Requirement: Extensive, hands-on experience in advanced woodworking and CNC operation is essential and serves as the core qualification for this role.
  • Solid experience in custom fabrication, scenic production, exhibit building, millwork, or metalworking in a busy shop environment, with demonstrated experience in digital fabrication tools (such as 3D printing, and CAD/CAM integration).
  • Hands-on experience in architectural millwork, custom cabinetry, surface prep, bodywork, and HVLP spraying.
  • High standard of craft, delivering clean finishes, joinery, and assembly to match aesthetic goals.
  • Ability to read shop drawings, technical blueprints, and cut lists to build finished pieces.
  • Ability to turn design concepts into practical builds using cut lists, quick sketches, and mockups.
  • Confidence with precision measuring tools, layout instruments, and shop machinery.
  • Skill in prioritizing work, keeping track of progress, and keeping safety first, across multiple projects.
  • A collaborative mindset with strong communication skills.
  • Adaptable to both highly ambiguous tasks and detailed build to print type instruction.
  • Strong personal accountability, ownership, and reliability.
  • Ability to mentor junior fabricators, and guide shop workflows to meet project deadlines.
  • Computer skills required, including experience with Google Workspace and project management tools.

About this role

Deeplocal is an innovation studio that builds one-of-a-kind physical experiences for major brands—think Netflix's interactive Switch or Google's photo-based payment installations. As a Fabricator III, you'd be the senior craftsperson leading the shop side of these ambitious projects, handling everything from precision woodworking and CNC machining to metal fabrication, finishing, and on-site installation at client locations worldwide. You'd own the quality and execution of custom components across exhibit builds, while mentoring junior fabricators and helping shape shop workflows and production decisions.

This role demands extensive hands-on experience in advanced woodworking, CNC operation, and custom fabrication in a fast-paced environment—ideally with background in scenic production, architectural millwork, or exhibit building. You'll need solid skills in digital fabrication tools, surface prep, bodywork, and spray finishing, plus the ability to read technical drawings, work from concept sketches, and solve problems creatively. Beyond the craft itself, you'll collaborate closely with designers and engineers, communicate clearly across teams, and take ownership of both the details and the bigger picture of each build.

The role is full-time and remote-eligible, based out of Deeplocal's Pittsburgh studio in a renovated brewery loft space. If you thrive building high-quality custom work, care deeply about craft and precision, and want to mentor others while contributing to projects that get real media attention, this is worth a serious look.
