Description

At SimPL Freight Solutions, we simplify transportation for companies that move a lot of freight but don’t want the headache of managing it all themselves. We step in as their transportation team - coordinating shipments, managing carrier relationships, tracking performance, and improving how everything runs behind the scenes.

Our customers range from large manufacturers to high-volume distributors across industries like automotive, building materials, food, and packaging. No matter the industry, the goal is the same: keep freight moving smoothly, efficiently, and without surprises.

We pride ourselves on being proactive, responsive, and accountable - anticipating issues, communicating clearly, and continuously finding better ways to deliver results.

Job Type: Full-time

Hours: M-F, 8am-5pm

Position Overview

We are seeking an organized, detail-oriented Legal Specialist to support our legal and risk management function, including cargo claims handling. Reporting to the Senior Legal Specialist, this person will assist with legal research, contracts and documentation, compliance tracking, and assigned claims involving freight loss, damage, and shortages.

You will work closely with the Senior Legal Specialist and internal teams to gather information, maintain accurate records, track deadlines, and keep matters moving toward resolution. The right candidate asks thoughtful questions, evaluates conflicting information, communicates professionally, and recognizes when a matter requires further review or approval.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Legal and Compliance Support

  • Assist the Senior Legal Specialist with legal research and gather relevant information on transportation laws, regulations, contracts, and other assigned matters.
  • Assist with drafting, reviewing, and organizing contracts, agreements, correspondence, and other legal documents under the direction of the Senior Legal Specialist.
  • Maintain legal files, contract records, and databases; track key dates, renewals, outstanding requests, and follow-up items.
  • Support compliance monitoring, documentation, and reporting, and help maintain internal procedures and checklists.
  • Gather insurance documentation and assist with reviewing certificates, policy information, and coverage questions for review by the Senior Legal Specialist.
  • Coordinate information requests and communications with internal teams, external counsel, and other parties as directed.

Claims Support

  • Handle assigned cargo claims from initial notification through resolution and closure under the guidance of the Senior Legal Specialist.
  • Gather and review shipment records, claim forms, invoices, photographs, delivery documents, and other supporting evidence; investigate discrepancies and follow up on missing information.
  • Prepare and submit claim packages to carriers and, when applicable, insurance representatives; communicate with customers, carriers, adjusters, and internal teams regarding status and next steps.
  • Maintain accurate claim files, track deadlines, and document communications and follow-up activity.
  • Review claim responses and denials, assist with supporting responses, and coordinate approved settlements and payment follow-up.
  • Escalate disputed claims, coverage concerns, potential liability, and other significant issues to the Senior Legal Specialist for review and direction.
  • Help identify recurring claims patterns and opportunities to improve documentation and operational processes.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Legal Assistant or Paralegal program, or at least two years of relevant experience in legal support, compliance, insurance, claims handling, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of legal terminology and documentation, with the ability to research unfamiliar topics and summarize findings clearly.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to evaluate information from multiple sources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional communication during difficult conversations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple files and competing deadlines.

  • High level of integrity, discretion, and confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word, and the ability to learn new systems.

Preferred Experience

About this role

SimPL Freight Solutions is looking for a Legal Specialist to support its legal and risk management operations in Raleigh, working Monday through Friday in their office. You'd report to the Senior Legal Specialist and split your time between two main areas: providing legal and compliance support—including legal research, contract review, records management, and insurance documentation—and handling cargo claims from start to finish. The claims work involves gathering evidence, investigating discrepancies, communicating with carriers and customers, and escalating complex issues when needed.

This role suits someone with a legal assistant or paralegal background, or at least two years of experience in legal support, compliance, insurance, or claims handling. You'll need strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple deadlines, sound judgment, and professional communication skills—especially when handling sensitive or disputed matters. Experience with freight operations, bills of lading, insurance documentation, or cargo claims is preferred but not required; what matters most is your capacity to learn, ask thoughtful questions, and work independently while knowing when to seek guidance.

SimPL offers a competitive base salary plus performance bonuses, medical and dental coverage, a 401k match, and 24 days of paid time off annually. The company values integrity, teamwork, and results, and emphasizes career growth and development opportunities.
