About this role

Oakland Ophthalmic Surgery in Birmingham is hiring a full-time Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe to support physicians in direct patient care. You'll perform preliminary eye exams using diagnostic equipment like OCT and visual field testing, document patient histories and exam findings in the electronic medical record, assist with minor procedures, and manage clinic flow by anticipating physician needs and keeping exam rooms stocked and ready. The role demands strong attention to detail, reliable customer service, and the ability to work efficiently under time pressure while maintaining HIPAA compliance.

Prior experience in optometry or ophthalmology is preferred but not required—what matters most is your willingness to learn ophthalmic techniques, eye anatomy, and relevant coding. You'll need basic computer skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office and EMR systems, and the physical capability to spend your day moving between tasks: sitting at a desk, standing during exams, and occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds. The company will reimburse you for eyecare certifications like COA, COT, or OSC if you pursue them.

This is a genuine full-time commitment with benefits including medical, vision, and dental insurance, 401k matching, paid time off, and paid maternity leave. You'll work Monday through Friday with occasional early or late hours, travel between the Birmingham and Troy offices as needed (with mileage reimbursement), and may be asked to work weekends. The posting explicitly states they cannot accommodate part-time students or gap-year workers, so apply only if you're ready for a sustained, full-time role.
