About this role

The Economist Group's Web team is looking for a mid-level software engineer to help grow its core audience by making economist.com faster, more intuitive, and more engaging. You'd work on React, Next.js, and TypeScript applications deployed to AWS, contributing across frontend and backend services that shape how readers discover and interact with journalism. The role balances individual ownership with collaborative input from engineers, product managers, and designers, and you'd be expected to contribute to production within your first week.

This position suits someone with solid commercial web development experience in JavaScript or TypeScript, a track record using React in production, and comfort writing automated tests. You should understand web performance and accessibility principles, have worked in agile product teams, and be willing to learn beyond your current expertise—Next.js and AWS experience are valued but not required. The team works iteratively, delivering features in small increments, so you'll need to make pragmatic technical decisions and communicate trade-offs clearly while maintaining documentation and championing code quality.

The Economist Group offers a competitive benefits package including a strong pension or 401(k), private health insurance, and counselling services. The role is remote-first with a minimum of two days per month in the Birmingham office, though the job posting lists the location as Commercial Point, Ohio. You'll receive free access to all Economist content and have flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 25 days annually, plus generous leave policies.
