About this role

Sony Pictures Animation is seeking a Story Artist for feature animation who will translate scripts into visual narratives through storyboarding. You'll work closely with directors, producers, and the head of story to develop everything from quick thumbnail sketches to polished panels that establish action, camera work, character performance, and pacing. The role involves pitching boards to leadership and crew, iterating based on feedback, and solving story and structural problems while maintaining consistent visual style across sequences.

This position requires strong foundational drawing skills alongside a nuanced understanding of character acting, staging, and cinematography. You should be comfortable working across multiple genres and styles—from comedy to drama to action—and translating directorial vision into clear, specific visual communication for the broader team. Proficiency with industry-standard tools like Cintiq, Toon Boom Storyboard Pro, and Photoshop is expected, along with the ability to write concise directions that guide other departments.

The role includes supervisory responsibilities for the story team, including hiring recommendations and artist feedback. You'll thrive here if you're self-motivated, adaptable to rapid changes in a production environment, and genuinely collaborative. This is a union position based in Los Angeles requiring in-office work.
