Description

We are looking to hire an Automation Engineer to work closely with teams across White Swan Data, including trading, quants, development, accounts and operations. This is an exciting opportunity to learn how they work, identify manual processes that could be automated, and build reliable solutions using the tools best suited to the problem, including AI.

In our fast-paced quantitative trading environment, accuracy and reliability matter as much as speed, and your work will directly free up colleagues’ time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with stakeholders: Embed yourself with teams across the business, building relationships and asking the right questions to understand their workflows, challenges and pain points, including where processes are not immediately obvious to automate.
  • Identify automation opportunities: Analyse existing processes, challenge inefficient ways of working and prioritise opportunities to reduce manual effort, improve accuracy and increase efficiency.
  • Build automation solutions: Design, develop and implement practical solutions using appropriate programming languages, APIs, workflow tools and AI technologies.
  • Own delivery and reliability: Take solutions from initial idea through testing and rollout, ensuring they are reliable, well-documented and continue to work as business needs evolve.
  • Measure and improve: Evaluate the impact of automation, gather feedback from colleagues and continuously refine solutions to deliver lasting improvements.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Must haves:
  • Experience in process automation, software engineering, data engineering or a similar technical role.
  • Proficiency in Python or another relevant programming language, with experience building automation solutions.
  • Understanding of APIs, system integrations, SQL and data processing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify inefficiencies and translate them into practical solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage busy, non-technical stakeholders, ask the right questions and challenge existing ways of working.
  • A proactive, curious mindset, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of projects from discovery through to implementation.
  • A focus on accuracy, reliability and continuous improvement.

Nice to haves:
  • Experience with workflow automation platforms, cloud services or AI-powered tools.
  • Familiarity with software testing, version control and production monitoring.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, data-driven environment, such as quantitative trading, financial services or technology.

Benefits

  • Salary depending on experience.
  • Annual discretionary performance bonus.
  • 25 days holiday per annum, plus UK bank holidays.
  • Private health & dental insurance.
  • Optical cover through Aviva.
  • Pension plan.
  • Gympass membership to over 1900 gyms and wellness businesses.
  • Breakfast bought in everyday and lunch bought in twice a week
  • Free coffee & snacks at the office.
  • Regular team events & socials.

About this role

White Swan Data is seeking an Automation Engineer to embed within their trading and operations teams in London, identifying and building solutions for manual processes across the business. You'll work across trading, quants, development, accounts and operations, learning how each function operates and spotting opportunities where automation—using Python, APIs, workflow tools, or AI—can improve accuracy and free up colleagues' time. This is fundamentally a role about understanding people and processes as much as technology: you'll need to ask the right questions of busy stakeholders, challenge inefficient ways of working, and translate what you learn into practical, reliable solutions.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in process automation, software engineering, or data engineering, with solid proficiency in Python or similar languages and a working knowledge of APIs, SQL and data systems. Beyond technical skills, you'll need strong communication abilities and genuine curiosity—the confidence to engage non-technical teams, take ownership of projects from discovery through implementation, and continuously refine solutions based on feedback. A background in quantitative trading, financial services, or other fast-paced data-driven environments is valued but not essential; what matters most is your analytical mindset, focus on reliability and accuracy, and ability to work independently.

The role is full-time and in-office in London. Compensation includes salary based on experience, an annual discretionary bonus, 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, private health and dental cover, pension, and Gympass membership. The company also provides daily breakfast and twice-weekly lunch, free office coffee and snacks, and regular team events.
