About this role
ISG's Power Group is looking for a seasoned relay and controls engineer to lead the technical design of protection systems for high-voltage substations serving FirstEnergy, a major utility client. You'd own the full scope of design deliverables—one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring layouts, and equipment specifications—while ensuring compliance with IEEE, NESC, and client standards. This is a hands-on role that balances deep technical problem-solving with client interaction; you'll serve as the primary technical contact for inquiries, present solutions to stakeholders, and coordinate across physical, civil, and structural teams to deliver safe, grid-supporting infrastructure.
The position calls for eight or more years in consulting or substation design, a BS in electrical engineering, and a valid driver's license for site visits and design reviews. An Ohio PE license is preferred but not required if you're working toward it. Beyond design work, you'll mentor junior engineers, review their deliverables, conduct training, and champion process improvements to strengthen team capability and efficiency. ISG operates as an employee-owned firm with a one-profit-center model, meaning resources and opportunities flow across all offices to support both clients and staff.
The role is full-time and based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with a salary range of $80,000 to $120,000. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, paid time off, paid parental leave, bi-annual profit sharing, an ESOP, 401(k), and voluntary supplemental coverage options.
