Description
More than 430 million people worldwide use SmartThings to control and manage their connected life. SmartThings delivers simple, powerful experiences across Samsung’s leading portfolio of phones, TVs, and appliances. We also offer the most versatile smart home experience as an open platform with a rich partner ecosystem (think IKEA, SONOS, Honeywell, and so many more). As a founding member of Matter, we are a leader in the industry to help make smart homes more secure, reliable and seamless to use. Come be a part of the leading edge of IoT innovation!
SmartThings is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Components and Device Actions (CODA) team. CODA owns the core device and location cloud services that the rest of the SmartThings platform builds on: how devices are described, organized, and managed, and how homes and their contents are represented and handed between owners. You'll join a tight-knit team of experienced engineers running mission-critical services at scale, with a roadmap that spans new platform capabilities, modernization of our stack, and growing demand from enterprise customers. It's a role with real influence over where these services go next.
This role is hybrid, 3 days/week in our Minneapolis Office (on iconic St Anthony Main across from Downtown...with paid attached parking!).
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Strategy: Chart the long-term direction for one or more CODA domains so our device and location services keep pace with platform growth.
- Complex Initiatives: Own large, ambiguous, multi-team efforts from first sketch to well-run production launch.
- Architecture for Reliability & Scale: Steer design for the services behind device capabilities, device groups, locations, and ownership transfer, including event-driven state processing and the demands of enterprise customers. Reliability, performance, and security shape the design from day one.
- Platform Modernization: Lead the evolution of our stack while balancing security, maintainability, and cost.
- AI Practices & Vision: Shape how the team adopts AI-assisted development and operational tooling, deciding where it genuinely improves speed and quality.
- Partnership Across Teams: Work alongside global platform, product, and partner teams that build on CODA, keeping priorities aligned with product needs and business goals.
- Mentorship & Team Growth: Coach engineers at every level and build habits that lift the bar across the organization.
- Service Ownership: SmartThings teams run what they build. You'll share responsibility for production support, from planning through deployment.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
- 8+ years of production software engineering with a record of Staff-level leadership
- Fluency in JVM languages (Java, Kotlin, etc.) and frameworks (Spring Boot, Micronaut, etc).
- A hands-on record designing and operating distributed microservices and RESTful APIs on AWS at scale, with Terraform and Docker in your toolkit
- Sound judgment across data and messaging layers: DynamoDB versus relational stores, and event-driven systems built on Kafka or similar
- Working knowledge of AI development tools and practices
- Proven ability to lead design reviews, steer direction across teams, and turn complex problems into simple solutions, with clear written and verbal communication for technical and non-technical audiences
Desired Skills
- Zero-downtime migrations and large-scale data backfills on live systems
- Observability, failure testing, and disciplined release practices
- Kubernetes and container orchestration in production
- Agentic coding tools, and a habit of sharing what works
- Multi-tenant platforms with permissions, usage limits, and rate limiting

About this role
SmartThings' Components and Device Actions team runs the cloud backbone that powers how devices are discovered, organized, managed, and transferred across the SmartThings ecosystem—infrastructure that serves over 430 million users globally. As Staff Software Engineer, you'd own the technical strategy and long-term evolution of one or more core domains within this mission-critical system, from designing for reliability and scale to leading major platform modernization efforts. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll architect distributed microservices on AWS, guide design decisions across teams, and shepherd complex initiatives from concept through production, while also mentoring engineers and shaping how the team adopts AI-assisted development.
The role demands deep expertise in JVM languages and frameworks, proven experience operating microservices and event-driven systems at scale, and a track record of Staff-level technical leadership. You'll need sound judgment across data and messaging layers, hands-on familiarity with Terraform and Docker, and the ability to communicate complex technical problems clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders. Experience with zero-downtime migrations, observability practices, Kubernetes, and multi-tenant platform design is valued. You'll be based in Minneapolis on a hybrid schedule (three days per week in office), with a salary range of $139,000–$198,000 plus a 20% annual bonus target.
