About this role
The Nursing and Midwifery Council is seeking a Senior Lawyer to lead the professional development and capability-building agenda within its legal services. This 18-month contract role sits within the Transformation and Technology Services team, working closely with the General Counsel to establish what the NMC calls its "One Legal Profession" approach. You'll design and implement learning programmes, professional standards, induction frameworks and knowledge-sharing systems that strengthen legal expertise across the organisation, while helping shape the Legal Capability Framework that defines career progression for lawyers, paralegals and aspiring legal professionals.
The role demands substantial legal experience grounded in regulatory law and professional standards, combined with genuine expertise in legal learning, CPD and knowledge management. You'll need to translate insights from case law, appeals and regulatory developments into practical guidance, identify emerging professional risks, and build a culture where continuous learning and clear professional standards are embedded into everyday practice. Strong collaboration and influencing skills are essential—you'll be working across the legal profession and beyond to build trusted relationships and bring people with you on this transformation.
The position offers a salary of £61,023–£68,481, 30 days annual leave, enhanced pension contributions (8–14% employer match), life insurance at 4x salary, and hybrid working at two days per week in the London office. A current UK practising certificate is desirable but not required; tertiary-level legal qualifications are essential. This suits someone who combines legal depth with a genuine commitment to developing others and improving professional practice.
