We recognise that AI function tools (such as ChatGPT or other generative AI tools) are here to stay and can be helpful for applications including to assist in researching for application responses and to shorten your first draft. However, we are observing a growing trend in the use of AI, and we would caution applicants against relying too heavily on such tools when drafting responses. The pitfall of such tools is that they produce generic responses that don’t showcase individuality, specific experiences or real-life examples. This usually results in applications being unsuccessful. We want to evaluate your response, and we will be looking for answers that use examples and experiences that are clearly specific to you. You are more likely to successfully demonstrate your soft skills like communication and teamwork when preparing answers to application questions yourself and this helps mitigate the unintended consequences of AI-generated responses. If we suspect you have used AI inappropriately, the panel reviewing your application may adjust how your response is rated. For more details of what we consider to be acceptable use of AI function tools in our application process, please review our FAQs on our careers page. About this role
Ambition Institute is looking for a senior research leader to set the organisation's research agenda and establish it as an authoritative voice in education. You would oversee both the research strategy—developing partnerships, securing external funding, and ensuring findings reach practitioners and policymakers—and the Data & Insights function, which handles evaluation and impact measurement to support organisational decision-making. This is a role that combines intellectual leadership with strategic influence, requiring you to champion evidence-based practice across the organisation while contributing to wider strategy at executive level.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD or equivalent track record of high-quality research publication, proven success leading diverse research portfolios across different methodologies, and demonstrated ability to secure external funding. You'll need deep expertise in research design, experience leading multidisciplinary teams, and a strong grasp of the English education system and educational disadvantage. Beyond technical skills, the role demands an established external profile and communication ability—you'll be Ambition's public voice on teacher development and school leadership, speaking and writing for practitioners, policymakers and the research community.
Based in London (with flexibility to work from Birmingham or Manchester), this full-time role offers a competitive salary of £76,000, 25 days' leave plus winter shutdown, 11% pension contribution, and hybrid working with a minimum office presence of two days per month. Part-time options are available.
