Description
ICON is hiring Test Technicians to operate, build, troubleshoot, and repair the systems that prove out our technology, from fluid and electro-mechanical test stands in our Austin lab to Phoenix printers on active test builds in the field. You’ll work hands-on with PLCs, motion control, hydraulics, and electrical systems, partner with test and sustaining engineering, and document everything you touch. Level and team (Product Test or Printing Test) are determined by your experience and the needs of the business.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Set up, operate, and troubleshoot mechanical, fluid, electro-mechanical, and printer test systems.
- Build and maintain test infrastructure: test stands, fluid panels, electrical cabinets, PLC-controlled assemblies, and welded assemblies.
- Diagnose and repair using schematics, multimeters, and Beckhoff TwinCAT. Replace parts, calibrate, and work through root cause.
- Terminate and connect electrical, pneumatic, camlock, and EtherCAT cabling.
- Support on-site test builds and field operations, including material logistics, QC measurements, and build tracking (Procore).
- Log test data, ticket work, track downtime, and keep inventory and documentation accurate.
- Follow and uphold SOPs for safety and testing.
- Higher levels: lead shifts, coordinate and mentor other technicians, drive upgrades with engineering, and own proactive reporting.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s in mechatronics, mechanical engineering technology, or related field preferred.
- Hands-on experience in mechanical, electrical, fluid, or manufacturing environments at the level’s required years (above). Technical certification, an Associate’s degree, or supervisory experience can offset years at Senior.
- Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication and a collaborative approach under pressure.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, stand and move for most of the day, climb ladders, and work outdoors in extreme heat, cold, rain, and mud, including sites without electricity.
- Willingness to travel outside Austin for multiple weeks at a time (required for Printing Test roles, occasional for Product Test) and flexibility for nights and weekends.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Welding (AC aluminum, DC steel), heavy equipment operation, hydraulics, generators.
- Familiarity with PLCs, VFDs, multi-axis machines, CNCs, or 3D printers.
- Background in aerospace, defense, aircraft, construction, or similar (A&P or technician certification a plus).
- Bachelor’s in manufacturing, engineering, or related field.
- Proficiency with Google/Microsoft tools and quick learning of new software.

About this role
ICON is looking for hands-on Test Technicians to build, operate, and troubleshoot the mechanical and electrical systems that validate their technology. Based in Austin, you'll work across fluid systems, electro-mechanical test stands, and printer equipment—both in the lab and at field sites. The role demands comfort with PLCs, hydraulics, electrical diagnostics, and welding, along with the ability to read schematics, terminate various cabling types, and document your work meticulously. You'll partner closely with engineering teams and handle everything from root-cause repair to inventory management.
This is a contract position suited to someone with hands-on experience in manufacturing, mechanical, electrical, or fluid systems environments. An Associate's degree in mechatronics or a related field is preferred, though relevant technical certifications or supervisory experience can substitute for formal education. You should be able to lift 50 pounds regularly, work outdoors in extreme conditions, and be willing to travel for weeks at a time—particularly if you're interested in the Printing Test track. The role offers room to grow: senior positions involve mentoring, shift leadership, and driving infrastructure upgrades with engineering.
