This is an individual-contributor role for a deep subject-matter expert who delivers results through hands-on expertise and cross-functional execution, resolving complex plan administration issues and managing vendor and broker relationships.

  • Write and maintain the policies and procedures that govern benefits administration; determine the right course of action for new or ambiguous cases where existing procedure doesn't fully cover the situation.
  • Produce and manage employee-facing benefits communications (open enrollment materials, plan change notices, FAQs) so employees have clear, accurate, timely information.
  • Manage vendor and broker relationships on an ongoing basis, coordinating RFPs, negotiating contract terms, and tracking service-level performance to keep delivery on track.
  • Track program performance against operational metrics (cost, utilization, service levels, employee satisfaction) and run improvement initiatives to fix identified gaps.
  • Build and maintain reporting/measurement tools that track benefits program impact and employee satisfaction over time.

About this role

Apptronik is looking for a Senior Benefits Specialist to design, administer, and oversee the full spectrum of employee benefits programs—health insurance, retirement plans, and wellness initiatives. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role based in Austin, working in-office on a contract basis. You'll own the day-to-day execution of benefits administration, from enrollment and eligibility through complex troubleshooting, while ensuring compliance with ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, and COBRA requirements.

The role demands deep expertise in benefits plan design and administration paired with strong vendor management skills. You'll write and maintain the policies governing how benefits run, create clear employee communications, negotiate with brokers and carriers, and build reporting tools to track program performance and satisfaction. A significant part of the work involves resolving ambiguous or escalated issues that don't fit neatly into existing procedures—situations where you'll need to weigh cost, compliance, and employee impact to determine the right path forward.

This position suits someone with 8+ years of benefits or total rewards experience who combines technical knowledge of employment law with the ability to influence stakeholders across HR, Finance, and Legal. You should be comfortable building measurement frameworks, communicating complex topics clearly to both employees and senior partners, and serving as the go-to expert for other HR staff on thorny administration questions.
