Description
This is Adyen
Adyen provides payments, data, and financial products in a single solution for customers like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft - making us the financial technology platform of choice. At Adyen, everything we do is engineered for ambition.
For our teams, we create an environment with opportunities for our people to succeed, backed by the culture and support to ensure they are enabled to truly own their careers. We are motivated individuals who tackle unique technical challenges at scale and solve them as a team. Together, we deliver innovative and ethical solutions that help businesses achieve their ambitions faster.
Head of Engineering: Financial Data Experience
At Adyen, payments and money movement are central to what we do. As the Head of Engineering for Financial Data Experience, you make sure our customers never have to work out where their money went. You build the datasets and experiences that our global merchants, regulators and Adyen Finance rely on to trust their numbers. Each of them receives fully explained financial data in a format they can verify and audit. You do this by defining what a payment, a fee, a payout or a correction looks like to a customer, and what our reconciliation experiences and reports actually show. This role bridges the gap between Adyen's internal ledger complexity and the unified, customer-facing money movement experience. The goal is an automated, self-serve, trustworthy experience.
What You Will Do
As Head of Engineering, reporting to the SVP of Engineering and working with peers across Payments, Financial Products, Platform, Compliance and Finance, your focus will be:
- Own the customer-facing model of money movement for merchants, regulators, and Adyen Finance, ensuring data reflects the merchant's entities and periods rather than mirroring internal systems.
- Own how that data is delivered: datasets, reports, files and dashboards, on the same terms for every team that publishes through us.
- Create an environment that fosters continuous innovation.
- Build a best-in-class team; developing and hiring great people with the right skills to deliver.
- Curious, approachable and desire to work in a highly collaborative manner - both internal and external.
- Exceptional at prioritization, putting our merchant and business needs ahead of personal ambition.
- Accountable for the execution of key projects, ensuring timely delivery, tracking progress, removing blockers, and assisting with planning and prioritization as needed.
- Driven by simplicity, standards and reuse.
- Stay close enough to the technology to judge a design yourself.
- Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing engineering organization, balancing robust scalability with the execution of complex, cross-stream technical projects.
Who You Are
- 10+ years in engineering, 5+ leading, including experience as a manager of managers.
- Experience hiring and managing a sizable engineering organisation (ideally 25-50 engineers), including managing managers, and setting an exemplary engineering culture
- You are literate in financial data. Ledgers, cut-offs, corrections and restatement, FX, fee attribution. You do not need payments; you do need to have worked where a number was an obligation rather than a metric.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and you are capable of translating complex technical concepts into clear, concise language, You are a great story teller, and are comfortable talking to tech & non-tech audiences, as well as merchants, vendors and internal stakeholders.
- You are comfortable streamlining the team's engineering operations, refining product requirements together with product and merchants and encouraging effective collaboration
- You have delivered through a platform you did not control, and got what you needed from it without a lever.
- You like to keep things simple, love dealing with uncertainty and get things done.
- You’re curious about what our biggest merchants are facing and you’re empathetic to solving problems that help all merchants.
- You are comfortable that the boundaries of this role are still being drawn, and you would rather help draw them than wait for them.

About this role
Adyen is looking for a Head of Engineering to own how financial data flows to customers—merchants, regulators, and internal finance teams. The core challenge is translating Adyen's complex internal ledger systems into clear, auditable, self-serve experiences that customers can trust and verify. You'll define what payments, fees, payouts, and corrections mean to end users, then ensure those definitions are consistently delivered across datasets, reports, files, and dashboards. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, product, compliance, and finance, requiring you to navigate competing priorities and deliver through systems you don't fully control.
You'll build and lead an engineering organization of 25–50 people, including managers, while staying close enough to the technical design to make sound judgments yourself. The role demands deep familiarity with financial data concepts—ledgers, cut-offs, corrections, FX, fee attribution—where numbers represent obligations rather than metrics. Beyond technical depth, you need exceptional communication skills to translate complexity for both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders, merchants, and vendors. You should be comfortable with ambiguity, thrive on simplification, and be willing to help shape a role whose boundaries are still being defined.
This is a full-time, in-office position in Amsterdam reporting to the SVP of Engineering. You'll need 10+ years in engineering with at least 5 in leadership, including experience managing managers and building engineering culture at scale.
