- Working alongside world-leading scientists and entrepreneurs in the field of Fusion
- Part of a start-up where growth on a company and individual level is the default
Your responsibilities
- Initiate and develop an R&D stream focused on fuel and fusible materials integration into experimental targets for in-house use.
- Investigate hydrogen isotope exchange reactions relevant to fuel materials, through hands-on laboratory work and/or modeling and simulation.
- Materials characterization: chemical and elemental analysis, including characterisation of hydrogen isotopes and light elements (atomic number < 9).
- Coordinating multi-partner consortia and associated reporting: build and maintain collabo-rations with academic and industrial partners;
- Drafting of public funding applications.
- Mentor junior scientists and coordinate cross-functional teams.
- Documentation and reporting: write and oversee technical and safety documentation, pro-tocol development, and contribute to internal, external, and funding-body reports.
What you bring
- 8+ years of experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a re-lated field, with demonstrated seniority in an R&D environment.
- A background in isotope exchange chemistry, from experimental or computational work.
- Experience in analytical techniques for hydrogen isotopes and light elements (atomic number < 9), such as ToF-SIMS, nano-SIMS, APT, Raman spectroscopy, NRA, ERDA, NMR, FTIR, GDOES or equivalent.
- Practical experience working with processes under inert atmosphere for sensitive or re-active materials.
- A track record leading or contributing to multi-partner research or industrial collabora-tions.
- Experience leading or contributing to public funding applications, with a track record of awarded proposals.
- Providing technical leadership and mentoring junior scientists and engineers in an ex-perimental environment with evolving priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, including technical writing for proposals and reports.
What sets you apart
- Experience in fusion, plasma physics, inertial confinement fusion (ICF), or energy systems.
- Experience with vacuum and gas-handling systems for hydrogen isotope work.
- Publication record or recognized expertise in hydrogen isotope chemistry or hydrogen stor-age materials.
- Awareness of tritium-specific handling, safety, and regulatory considerations, even without direct hands-on tritium experience.

About this role
Marvel Fusion is seeking an experienced fuel scientist to lead the development of materials and fuel integration for their inertial confinement fusion experiments. You would establish and run a new R&D stream focused on hydrogen isotope exchange chemistry and fusible materials characterization, working hands-on in the laboratory while also building and maintaining collaborations with academic and industrial partners. The role combines technical depth—designing and executing analytical work on hydrogen isotopes and light elements using specialized techniques like ToF-SIMS, nano-SIMS, and NMR—with leadership responsibilities including mentoring junior scientists, coordinating cross-functional teams, and drafting public funding applications.
This position suits someone with 8+ years in chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering who has demonstrated seniority in R&D and a specific background in isotope exchange chemistry. You should be comfortable with inert-atmosphere processes, experienced in leading or contributing to multi-partner research collaborations, and have a track record of success with public funding proposals. Strong technical writing and communication skills in English are essential, as you'll be responsible for documentation, safety protocols, and reporting to both internal teams and funding bodies.
Based in Munich and requiring full-time in-office presence, the role offers the chance to work on fusion energy alongside world-leading scientists at Europe's leading fusion company. Marvel Fusion provides professional development support, relocation assistance, comprehensive benefits, and 30 days of vacation. Prior experience in fusion physics, vacuum systems, tritium handling, or hydrogen storage materials would strengthen your candidacy, though the core requirement is demonstrated expertise in hydrogen isotope chemistry and analytical characterization.
