What you bring
- 8+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field, with demonstrated seniority in an R&D environment.
- Experience in micro-assembly or sub-micrometric precision integration of multi-material components at micro scale (e.g. micro-/nano-manipulator, FIB, pick-and-place systems).
- Experience with metrology and characterization techniques, and quality control for assembled targets, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical or confocal microscopy, and computer tomography (CT).
- Experience with bonding techniques for target components using methods such as micro-soldering and different bonding processes (e.g. adhesive, eutectic, or diffusion bonding).
- Practical experience working with processes under inert atmosphere for sensitive or reactive materials.
- Experience working in ISO-classified cleanroom environments.
- A track record leading or contributing to multi-partner research or industrial collaborations.
- Experience leading or contributing to public funding applications, with a track record of awarded proposals.
- Providing technical leadership and mentoring junior scientists and engineers in an experimental environment with evolving priorities.

About this role
Marvel Fusion is building Europe's leading fusion energy company, and this role sits at the heart of their experimental target development. As Target Assembly Specialist, you would establish and lead a new R&D stream focused on the micro-assembly and integration of components into fusion targets. This means taking ownership of precision fabrication processes—from developing bonding and adhesive techniques to characterizing finished assemblies using advanced metrology tools like SEM and CT scanning. You'd also coordinate collaborations with academic and industrial partners, contribute to funding applications, and mentor junior team members as the program grows.
The role demands substantial hands-on expertise: at least eight years in mechanical engineering, precision engineering, or materials science, with proven experience in micro-assembly, metrology, and bonding processes for multi-material components at micro scale. You should be comfortable working in cleanroom environments and with sensitive materials under inert atmospheres. Leadership experience—whether in research collaborations or securing public funding—is essential, as is the ability to communicate technical work clearly in English.
If you have a background in fusion, plasma physics, or cryogenic systems, that's a significant advantage. This is a full-time, in-office position in Munich with a team of 120 scientists and engineers backed by over €385 million in funding. The company offers standard Munich-based benefits including public transport subsidy, professional development budget, relocation support, and 30 days of vacation.
