About this role
Riot Games is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead ML strategy and implementation for an unpublished R&D game project. You'll own the full lifecycle of ML systems—from conceptualization through production—working across developers, designers, and data scientists to solve real-time, interactive challenges. The role emphasizes both technical depth and pragmatism: you'll apply cutting-edge techniques like reinforcement learning while establishing reliable pipelines, evaluation practices, and engineering standards that can scale across Riot's organization.
This position requires at least six years shipping ML systems in production, with three-plus years in applied modeling or ML research, ideally in real-time or interactive contexts. You'll need hands-on expertise in reinforcement learning applied to practical problems, experience managing systems where model decisions have downstream consequences, and fluency with modern ML frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow. Strong cross-disciplinary collaboration and communication skills are essential, as is a Computer Science degree or equivalent and proficiency in Python.
The role is based in Los Angeles and requires in-office work. Beyond the technical challenge, Riot emphasizes player empathy and craft expertise as core to success here. The company offers open paid time off, flexible schedules, comprehensive health insurance, parental leave, and 401k matching.
