About this role

Oddball is seeking a System Architect to lead the technical strategy for FISS, a massive Medicare Part A claims processing system running on a 3+ million line COBOL mainframe. This is a Key Personnel role contingent on contract award, meaning you'd be asked to sign a letter of intent and may participate in proposal activities before the position is finalized. You'll own architectural decisions across the entire system, ensuring that COBOL, CICS, and VSAM changes maintain safety and integrity while the platform modernizes.

The role sits at the intersection of legacy and modern infrastructure. You'll define how the mainframe integrates with cloud-hosted components and AWS-based services, collaborate with engineers building Java and API solutions, and serve as the technical escalation point when complex issues arise. This requires deep hands-on experience with mainframe environments, proven success integrating legacy systems with cloud platforms, and familiarity with modern API patterns. Prior work on Medicare or Medicaid claims systems is valued but not required.

You'll work fully remote with a collaborative team at a small company where technical decisions have real impact on millions of people. The position requires a bachelor's degree, U.S. work authorization, and depending on the contract, possibly U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a federal security clearance. Compensation ranges from $120,000 to $165,000, with a yearly stipend, comprehensive benefits, 401(k) match, and flexible PTO.

Pay for this role

The employer didn't post a pay range for this role. That usually means pay is set in negotiation, which favors whoever arrives with numbers. Check ranges on comparable System Architect postings in your area, and analyze any offer before you accept it.
